Information Technology Security
Program Information

This program is comprised of 68 credits, including seven
core courses in IT Security, supporting courses and general
education courses. The course work emphasizes
understanding and demonstrated skills in the following
concepts related to IT security:
- Security policies, intrusion detection systems, router
security, TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/
Internet Protocol), and network security basics
- Implementing and managing a firewall
- Auditing tools
- Basics of cryptography, biometrics and file encryption
- Hardware and software designed to secure information
network systems
- Legal aspects of IT security
All IT Security courses are offered in a "Blended" format, meaning courses are offered in a format that is 50% online and 50% in traditional seated classes. All courses for the IT Security program are held at the St. Petersburg College Allstate Center in classroom AC-102.
Courses offered in the Associate in Science degree program include:
- Introduction to Network Security Foundations
- Operating System Security
- Network Defense and Countermeasures
- Ethical Hacking
- Laws and Legal Aspects of IT Security
- Database Security
- Incident Response and Disaster Recovery

| Skills Needed |
To succeed in the IT Security program at SPC, you should have the
following skills:
- Basic reading, writing and critical thinking skills
- General computer literacy skills
- The ability to research topics using the Web
- A basic knowledge of networking
- A working knowledge of the Microsoft Windows
operating system
- A working knowledge of the Linux operating system
- An understanding of database fundamentals
- In addition, computer usage skills are a prerequisite for
this program.
