Step 1: Define your personality style:
Directions for defining your interests

In this part of Step 1, you will use two interest inventories to take two "tours" of the World of Work.  This exercise will help you identify work-related activities that you most enjoy. Upon completion, you will list your strongest work-related interests on your printed copy of the Personality Style Profile (Form 1).

Please note that you must complete this interest assessment exercise if you wish to use this program! The other assessment areas (skills, values, behavioral traits) are optional.

Directions:

  1. Print a copy of this checklist.  On your printed copy, check off each step as it is completed to keep a record of your progress through this exercise.

  2. Complete each step in the order presented.  Note: for the hyperlinks found below to work, you must be viewing this checklist online.

Steps

[  ]

[1]  Complete The Perfect Career Interest Inventory.

Click the link to the right to take The Perfect Career Interest Inventory.  Fill in the Registration data (or enter your Username and Password if you've already registered).  This is a standard interest inventory and is free of charge.  It takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and will help you identify your work-related interests.  You may take this inventory as many times as you wish.

When you have completed this inventory, print a copy of your Interpretation Report and then move to the next step below.

[2]  Complete the Career Clickers eXpanded Interest Inventory.

Like The Perfect Career above, this too is a standard interest inventory and is also free of charge.  We suggest that you use two interest inventories as one inventory alone can not expose you to all the activities found in our World of Work.  Again, you may take this inventory as often as you wish.

Click the link to the right to take the Career Clickers eXpanded interest inventory.

When you have completed this inventory, print a copy of your Interpretation Report and then move to the next step below.

[4]  Review your printed copy of the summary report from the Career Clickers eXpanded Interest Inventory, especially the list of work-related activities associated with each of your top interest areas.

[5]  Summarize your interests on the Personality Style Profile (Form 1).

Using the results of The Perfect Career Interest Inventory, the Career Clickers eXpanded Interest Inventory, and any other career interest inventory you have taken, as clues to your interests, describe up to six work-related activities that you consider to be your strongest interests.

List your selections (one per line) on your printed copy of the Personality Style Profile (Form 1), under the interests section. Click the sample profile to the right to see how your profile should look.

Consider the following before you describe your interests:

  1. Do not list any activity that you would not be willing to do in a work situation.

  2. Do not list job titles, only work-related interests.

  3. Do not repeat any activity - each line should contain a unique interest.

  4. Feel free to list any work-related activities that you are interested in even if they did not appear in either interest inventory above, as long as these activities are among your strongest interests.

When finished with this step, move to the next step below.
