Introduction
Internships and
cooperative education
provide college students
with work
experience while
attending college.
Cooperative education
experiences are in
positions
related to your major,
while an internship
may or may not be
related to your major.
Internship and
cooperative education
experiences could be part-time or full
time; start as a temporary
assignment and
become a full time
position; offer a salary,
small stipend or be
a volunteer
position; or last only a few
weeks or an entire
school semester or
year.
Advantages for students
include:
- An opportunity to
test out a career
before
committing to it as
a goal.
- A means of
developing real work
experience while in
school.
- An opportunity to
relate your studies
to real work
situations.
- An opportunity to
develop career
contacts with
potential employers.
- In the case of
cooperative
education, an
opportunity to earn
college credit. Note,
at SPC, college
credit is not
awarded for an
internship.
Internship vs.
cooperative education
Internships and
cooperative education
are
similar in design with
two
exceptions: cooperative
education experiences earn college
credit and are more
structured, managed and
monitored.
SPC student eligibility
-
Must have completed
12 or more credit
hours at SPC.
- Must have a
cumulative GPA of at
least 2.0.
- Must have or secure
a position related
to major.
- Students may earn up
to 12 hours of co-op
credit while
attending SPC.
