To identify occupations related to your interests, we suggest you use two online services: O*NET and the Occupational Outlook Handbook (see descriptions below).

Caution!  Selecting a career goal should not be made simply by identifying occupations related to your interests.  Other factors, such as your skills, values and behavioral traits should also be considered.  To select a career goal that matches your overall personality style, please use our Career Selection and Planning Guide.

To simply identify occupations related to your interests, please follow the directions below.

O*NET Online

O*NET Online, developed by the U.S. Department of Labor, is the largest collection of occupational information available today!  The O*NET database contains information on more than 800 occupations.  Occupations are organized according to a number of factors, including interests. To find occupations related to your interests, use either of the following options:

  • The Quick Search by Keyword function.  Type in a word or words that describe your interests (example: writing) and click the GO button to view of list of related job titles.

  • Open the Browse by Job Family menu and select a career field that best matches your interests to view occupations related to that field (interest).

Occupational Outlook Handbook

The Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) is another career database developed by the U.S. Department of Labor.  It contains detailed profiles on hundreds of occupations. Occupations are arranged according to 11 broad interest areas as listed below.  Click on the areas that most closely match your interests to view a list of matching occupational titles (and descriptions):
