POSITION TITLE: Baccalaureate Biology
Laboratory/ Assistant/Advisor

BASIC FUNCTIONS:
Laboratory: Assists in the baccalaureate
biology program laboratory classes, under the supervision of a professional
faculty member. Advising: Provides prospective and current students academic
guidance by communicating with students, faculty, and staff on the choice of
academic courses needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Laboratory
Procures and maintains stock of specialized
items utilized in the baccalaureate biology program facilities.
Performs maintenance
of equipment and apparatus used in the baccalaureate biology program.
Coordinates with
instructors relative to ordering, receiving and inventory materials used in the
baccalaureate biology program.
Installs equipment
and laboratory furnishings in the baccalaureate biology program facilities.
Maintains inventory
of chemicals, glassware, etc.
Sets up equipment,
when required.
Maintains keys for science lockers.
Assists with the
lessons and materials for baccalaureate biology program laboratory classes.
Coordinates use of laboratory equipment and
materials.
May proctor tests.
Creates materials and
plans for classes as required.
Advising
Advises current and
future baccalaureate biology students concerning the biology major coursework
and state mandated prerequisites.
Assists in the
development and maintenance of a database for tracking current and prospective
biology students.
Utilizes PeopleSoft to admit, track, and
graduate baccalaureate biology students.
Explains the pre
requisite requirements and course sequences to students in the Biology major.
Assist with new student orientations.
Conveys accurate and
current academic information to students, faculty and staff.
Participates in on
and off campus functions related to recruitment to the Biology Major.
Follows federal, state, college and
departmental guidelines as it relates to the job.
Performs related
duties as required.
EDUCATIONAL
REQUIREMENTS:
Associate's degree in Science, with an emphasis in
biology or closely or related field. Bachelor’s degree in biology preferred.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Four (4) years experience working in a
biology laboratory. Previous student advising experience is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of
inventory control, laboratory equipment and maintenance. Knowledge of laboratory
terminology and equipment. Knowledge of lab maintenance. Understanding of and
ability to use available technology, materials and tools as related to the job.
Verbal and written communication skills essential as well as proficiency with computers.
Ability to work well with people and manage multiple tasks
and assignment.
