POSITION
DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Safety Specialist
DEPARTMENT: Facilities Planning &
Institutional Services SITE: EPI
SALARY SCHEDULE: Senior Career GRADE: 7
BASIC FUNCTION:
Coordinates
and maintains collegewide employee safety programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops
and implements employee procedures, policies and methods to maintain
compliance with federal, state and local OSHA regulations.
- Consults
with college administrative and career staff to provide guidance concerning
safety matters.
- Assists
college departments in developing employee safety training programs.
- Coordinates,
develops and conducts safety related training programs for college
employees as required.
- Responsible
for new employee training on relevant safety issues. Provides information
concerning college safety procedures and policies through scheduled
orientation sessions.
- Coordinates
and conducts annual training for employees on federal, state and local
safety regulations.
- Coordinates
and tracks medical evaluations for employees who participate in the
college’s respiratory protection program.
Coordinate and tracks medical blood lead level screenings for
employees that perform work in lead contaminated environments at the
Indoor Firing Range.
- Develops
and maintains a database of employee training records.
- Coordinates
work performed by Board of Trustees approved consultants with respect to
safety issues.
- Evaluates
compliance with the safety program by making inspections of facilities to
identify and unsafe conditions and practices.
- Assists
departments in employee safety issues and recommends or assists in
developing procedures and selection of equipment and materials to correct
unsafe conditions and practices.
- Develops
and maintains safety policy and procedures manuals for use by college
employees as required.
- Participates in college and
outside agency and organization committees and meetings as required.
- Develops and submit reports
related to safety issues to college personnel and outside agencies as
required.
- Performs
related duties as required.
EDUCATIONAL
REQUIREMENTS:
Associates
degree or completion of two (2) years of college courses related to job responsibilities. Must be able to complete an
occupational safety course within one year of employment. It is
preferred that the candidate work toward obtaining a bachelor’s degree with
emphasis on course work related to occupational safety within five years of
employment.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Three
(4) years experience in safety related or loss prevention and control issues.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILL
REQUIREMENTS:
Working
knowledge of the federal, state and local safety regulations. Good verbal and written
communication skills. Ability to work well with employees and
outside regulatory agencies and organizations. Ability
to conduct meetings with groups. Ability to conduct
safety inspections and to prepare and conduct employee safety training programs.
Skill in the use of a computer.
