POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Veterinary Technician
DEPARTMENT: Veterinary Technology SITE: HEC
SALARY SCHEDULE: Career - GRADE: 3
BASIC FUNCTION:
Responsible for overseeing the operations of a kennel in the department of Veterinary Technology. Work hours will include weekends and holidays as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
v Oversees and supervises the operations of a veterinary kennel to ensure the well-being of animals housed in the facility.
v Ensures the protocols of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the USDA are followed.
v Maintains computerized records of animals entering and exiting the kennel. Maintains feeding charts and schedules for animals. Processes animal records to include vaccination and medicine.
v Assigns and supervises the work of student assistants to insure coverage during weekends and holidays.
v Assists instructors and students in the laboratory as assigned. Assists with treatments within prescribed limits.
v Assists instructors during class time as assigned.
v Supervises and participates in feeding of animals and cleaning of the kennels, equipment and machines in the laboratory. Performs routine hospital maintenance and cleaning duties and makes sure that they are accomplished on a scheduled basis.
v Maintains cleaning supplies, animal supplies, prescribed drugs, food, litter and related items. Compiles inventory records. Orders supplies, drugs, food, litter, etc., in accordance with department policies and procedures.
v Implements and assures compliance with college procedures concerning biohazardous waste disposal and OSHA regulations. Assists in enforcing emergency preparedness plan for the kennel.
v Performs related duties as required.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology is required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Two (2) years experience involving the care of animals, including experience in maintaining inventory and related records.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of
the process involved in the care and feeding of animals. Ability to gain
knowledge of the protocols established by the college and OSHA relating to care
of animals. Ability to gain knowledge of biohazardous waste procedures and
emergency procedures. Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment. Knowledge of
basic mathematics. Computer skills. Ability to assign and supervise the work of
student assistants. Ability to perform manual laboring and cleaning. Ability to
work well with people. Able to lift 40
pounds.
