Verification
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Why was my file selected for Verification?

  • Selection by the federal processor is purely random.
  • However, conflicting information can cause the processor to select your file.
  • SPC must select for Verification any files that appear to have conflicting information.

The $1,000,000 question: How long does Verification take?

  • The number of files ready for Verification, as well as the time required to process them, is directly proportional to the decreasing number of days before classes begin. "The longer you wait, the longer it takes".
  • The Verification itself only takes a few minutes, however if corrections to your file are required, an additional 10 to 14 working days may be required.

Would you like to decrease the processing time for your file?

  • Start early and check your accuracy against the documents you use to complete the forms.
  • Ample processing time is needed to ensure our adherence to federal regulations.

Student Aid Reports (SAR):

  • Student Aid Reports (results of your FAFSA) are verified on a first received, first completed timeline.

Examples of needed documents:

  • If you are an INDEPENDENT student, please provide: Signed Independent Worksheet and Signed 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ or telefile tax record.
  • If you are a DEPENDENT student, please provide: Dependent Worksheet signed by student and parents and signed 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ or telefile tax record for both student and parents.
  • W-2's if student and spouse or parent DID NOT FILE IRS Forms.
  • Any written (and signed) statements that may be requested.
  • Documents are not completed unless they are signed.

Secrets to a Speedy Verification:

It is the student's responsibility to BE PREPARED and to:

  • Have copies of tax forms used on the FAFSA ready and signed.
  • Students who do not have copies of tax returns can contact the local IRS office or call 800-829-1040.
  • All forms and statements must have the Student ID either printed or written on them. Students should write their Student ID on all documents submitted.

Why do I need corrections and how long will that take?

  • Verification often uncovers incorrect information on the FAFSA.
  • Incorrect answers to questions on the FAFSA affect eligibility both positively and negatively.
  • Federal regulations require that certain corrections be made.
  • Corrections may take up to 10 to 14 working days.

Other Documentation Needed:

  • There could be other documents that may be necessary to complete a file.
  • These documents are in addition to the Verification process.
  • The Federal Processor alerts the student to these issues on the first page of the Student Aid Report (SAR). A "C" placed next to the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number indicates issue(s) to be resolved (i.e. EFC 1256 C).
  • Financial assistance cannot be awarded until all outstanding issues are resolved.
  • Copies of: social security cards, marriage licenses, citizenship papers or birth certificates, selective service registration (www.sss.gov), INS alien registration cards could be requested.

INS Processing

  • The federal processor conducts a database match with INS for students who are Resident Aliens.
  • Additional documentation could be needed from the student.
  • Resolution of this issue is also required before we can award financial assistance.
