Departmental Awards


Apollo Award - The Alumni Association will present a plaque and a monetary award to an outstanding graduating sophomore excelling in scholastics, leadership ability and student activities. Contact Gina Profit at the Office of Institutional Advancement.


Carolyn Parker Memorial English Award - A $100 award will be presented to an English major graduate from the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus. The award will be based on overall academic achievement, creative performance and contributions to English activities. Contact Evelyn Finklea.


Cele Herring Math Scholarship - Established to promote and perpetuate the memory of Cele Herring - an SPC student, a loyal and dedicated volunteer in the SPC math department, and a working nurse in Pinellas County for 60 years. The award will provide $1,000 scholarships to students in need of financial assistance who are enrolled in a mathematics program and attending classes full, or part time at any SPC campus. These scholarships are per year and may be used for tuition, books, fees or other miscellaneous college expenses. Recipients are selected by the mathematics faculty at the St. Petersburg/Gibbs campus. Contact Sharon Griggs at the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus mathematics department.

Creative Writing Award - The Communications Program is offering the "Writer of the Year" Award from Obelisk. Recipient's name will be engraved on the Parker Plaque at the St. Petersburg/Gibbs campus. Contact Evelyn Finklea.

Edna Allwurden Andrews Memorial Mathematics Award
- Established by her daughter, Bunny Andrews Schroeer, son-in-law Dietrich Schroeer and two grandchildren Karsten and Alison Schroeer, to honor the memory of Mrs. Edna Allwurden Andrews - an alumna of SPC and Pinellas County teacher for 32 years. The mathematics faculty will nominate and select the recipients for the scholarships of varied amounts. Contact Sharon Griggs at the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus.

Joseph W. Howland Mathematics Award - A $100 award will be presented to a Clearwater Campus student who has successfully completed at least one developmental math course and succeeded in college-level course work. Recipient must have an overall 3.0 GPA and must be recommended by the mathematics faculty. Contact Bill Hemme at the Clearwater Campus Mathematics Program Office.

Mary Rowena Perrin Humanities Award
- A $100 award will be presented to a Humanities/Fine Arts major graduate from the Clearwater Campus. The award will be based on academic achievement along with strong interest in Humanities. Contact Mark Hunter at the Clearwater Campus Humanities/Fine Arts Program Office.

Mathematics Award - A $200 award will be presented to a freshman or sophomore majoring in mathematics and registered at the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus. Recipient should have an interest in teaching mathematics. Contact Sharon Griggs.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship Award - The Alpha Zeta Tau Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), a National Honor Fraternity, will present a $100 award to a student best exemplifying intellectual, cultural and educational contributions to the Tarpon Springs Campus. Recipient must be registered at the Tarpon Springs Campus. Contact Mark Peebles at the Tarpon Springs Campus.


Scott Walling Speech Award - A $100 award will be presented to a Clearwater Campus student excelling in Speech. The award will be based on grades and excellence in public speaking along with a strong interest in continuing these skills. Contact Bonnie Jefferis at the Clearwater Campus Humanities/Fine Arts Program Office.


Shrider Mathematics Award - An award offered to a freshman or sophomore majoring in mathematics and registered at the Clearwater Campus. Recipient should plan to teach mathematics. Contact Bill Hemme.


The George F. Hieber, II Scholarship for Excellence in College Preparatory Mathematics - Established to honor George F. Hieber, II - instructor of developmental mathematics on the Clearwater Campus for nine years. The award will honor a Clearwater Campus student who has demonstrated excellence in college preparatory mathematics. Contact Bill Hemme at the Clearwater Campus Mathematics Program Office.


Virginia E. Follin English Award - The Communications Program is offering a $100 award to an English major graduate from the Clearwater Campus. The award will be based on ability, leadership and financial need.

William Ketchum Memorial Award - Established in memory of a former SPC instructor. The award will be presented to a St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus mathematics student. Contact Sharon Griggs at the the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus Mathematics Program Office.


William R. Rice Mathematics Award - Established in memory of William R. Rice - mathematics professor for 33 years at SPC. The mathematics faculty committee will select recipients for the various awards among deserving mathematics students. Contact Sharon Griggs at the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Mathematics Program Office.
