The Florida International Museum opened in downtown St. Petersburg in 1995 in a former department store. The museum, which is credited with sparking the resurgence of downtown St. Petersburg, brought a series of blockbuster traveling exhibitions over the next several years, including Treasures of the Czars in 1995; Splendors of Ancient Egypt in 1996; Titanic in 1998; and Diana, a Celebration in 2005. In 2006, the museum moved to a smaller space in St. Petersburg College’s Downtown Center.
Last year, as its last exhibit as an independent museum, Florida International Museum exhibited Vatican Splendors, which featured art and artifacts from the Vatican and drew more than 100,000 visitors in about five weeks.
Later in 2008, the museum became part of SPC and was retitled the Florida International Museum at St. Petersburg College. In a New Light: Selections from the Gulf Coast Museum of Art Collection was its first exhibit as part of the college.
