Shanette graduated from the MLT Program in 2001. Her career has taken her all the way to Africa! Read about her journeys after graduation.

"After SPJC, I graduated from the University of South Florida with a B.S in Medical Technology. My first job as a technologist was at Brandon Regional Hospital where I only worked for a few months, as an amazing opportunity to work in cancer research as a research technician was offered to me. I worked full time as a research technician at the H Lee Moffitt Cancer Research but still continued to work part-time as a technologist at the University Community Hospital.

From 2003-2005, I returned full time to working as a generalist medical technologist in the Florida Hospital system. In October 2005, I accepted a position at the Johns Hopkins Hospital where I became departmentalized and worked in the Tranfusion Medicine Department. I transferred to the HIV Specialty Lab full time in early 2007 but continued to work part-time in the Transfusion Medicine Department, and this was where I developed the interest in HIV research. During this time, I decided to go back to school and pursued a M.Sc. Degree in Health Systems Management, which I received from the University of Baltimore.

From May 2009 until June 2010, I held the position of lab manager at the Zambia Emory HIV Research Project in Lusaka, Zambia. I recently accepted a position with Duke University as their Scientific/Laboratory Research Manager in Moshi, Tanzania with the Kilmanjaro Christian Medical Center(KCMC)-Duke collaboration project.  I am very excited about the post and scheduled to leave in early October 2010 for my new journey.

I am very grateful to all my professors and advisers who encouraged me to pursue the field of medical technology. With my clinical lab science background, I have been afforded the ability to be very flexible with my career. So far, I have only studied two paths of lab science, clinical and research, but there are so many other areas left to be explored."

Featured Alumnus -- Roxanna Coblentz

Roxanna graduated from the online MLT Program in 2007. To date, she holds the record for being the program's most distant student. Read about the unique challenges she faced taking the program in Alaska!

"I decided in 2004 that I would like to go back to school and the only way I could do that was online. I live on an island in Southeast Alaska called Wrangell. When doing the research online, I found St. Petersburg College. So I applied for the MLT program and enrolled in the courses I needed to start. During the process of taking the classes online, I worked full time for Wrangell Medical Center as a phlebotomist. My clinical affiliate was located 60 miles south on another Island. So every other week for 2 ½ years I traveled to Ketchikan, mostly by ferry which is a 6 hour ride, and stayed for a week.  The online program was great. The staff was always helpful and any time I had a question, someone was right there.

I graduated, PASSED the MLT ASCP exam, and am currently working at Wrangell Medical Center as an MLT full time. I have 2 grandsons, am still married to the same man after 25 years, and enjoy going fishing, boating and living in Alaskal. I am very pleased that I found St. Petersburg College and completed a long time goal of mine. I hope my story will inspire other people to follow their heart and dreams."
