The technician must complete a thorough check of the anesthesia machine to assure that it is operating properly. Verification that valves and hoses are not leaking and that sufficient amounts of anesthetic gas and oxygen are available are essential. Waste gas scavenger systems should also be checked prior to using the anesthesia machine.

 Following extubation, the endotracheal tube must be cleaned with disinfectant solution and allowed to dry thoroughly. The cuff should be inflated on the tube during cleaning to ensure that all contaminants are removed.
