Veterinary Technology AS Distance Education Program
The Veterinary Technology Associate in Science Degree Program from St. Petersburg College is AVMA accredited and available by distance learning. Veterinary hospital employees can earn the veterinary technician degree without giving up full time jobs or moving to St. Petersburg. Students applying to the Distance Education Program must meet the Admission Requirements, must have completed 18 of the 22 credits of general education and support courses, including all communications, math and biology courses, and must be working at least 20 hours per week for a veterinary hospital or veterinarian in order to be able to fulfill the Lab Requirement portions of the classes. Applicants should also be computer literate. It is helpful to have a personal computer and modem at home, but some students are using only the veterinary hospital computers. Students may start courses in August, January, or May.
The credit earned by distance education is the same as credit earned on campus. Students may combine distance education courses with on-site courses in order to better accommodate work and family obligations. The difference between local and distance learning is in the method of delivery, not in the content or the desired outcomes. We look forward to receiving applications from you or your employees.
Apply
Applications are accepted to the Distance Education Program for Session I, which begins in late August; Session II, which begins in early January; and for Session III, which begins in May. Time is of the essence, as applications should be completed 2-3 months before the start of the term. If you need any additional information, contact us at 727-341-3687 or e-mail us.
Online Courses
All courses are now in the College's course management system, ANGEL. Midterm and final exams are proctored by local college test administrators. Some classes may hold weekly online live chat conferences for 45 minutes per week. These are scheduled at 7 p.m., 8 p.m., or 9 p.m. EST Monday through Thursday nights. Laboratory courses require the host veterinarians or their employees to help teach and evaluate the student's lab skills.
