Health Information Management

The Health Information Management program is designed to provide a student with the computer and technical skills necessary to prepare, analyze, and maintain health information required by the patient, health facility and the public. Special emphasis is given to the management of computerized health information. Application of didactic instruction is applied in the classroom laboratory and is provided through professional practice experience in local health care facilities. Upon completion of the program, the student will be awarded an Associate in Science degree in Health Information Management.

In order to be successful in the Health Information Management Program, the student must be able to demonstrate essential student functions.

ELIGIBILITY FOR CREDENTIALING:

Possessing a professional credential enhances career prospects and salaries. Credentialed professionals undergo continuing education to update their knowledge and skills with current industry practices and technical changes.

Health Information Management students who have earned the Associate in Science degree are eligible to take the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credentialing exam offered by the American Health Information Management Association. The RHIT credential is recognized nationally and demonstrates a significant level of professional achievement and expertise to employers seeking qualified job candidates.

Medical Coding Certificate students are eligible to take one of three coding credentialing exams: Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) and Certified Coding Specialist- Physician-based (CCS-P).
