SLIS Lab (Student Learning for Information Security)

Student feedback together with budget limitations spawned the Student Learning for Information Security (SLIS) Lab. This was crafted to enhance student experiential learning, plus address the faculty access issues that were exacerbated by budget cuts. The SLIS Lab creates a unique resource allowing remote faculty and distance students to gain hands-on experience without the need to travel. Part of the design uses a DMZ (demilitarized zone) to protect the infrastructure and allow student creativity without risking others. The SLIS lab will cover not only security tools, but also provide practical access to real-world problems encountered in organizations. These domains that consider organizational needs and technology for areas such as security administration, minimum rights and user security consideration provide very relevant extensions approaches found elsewhere.

A comment form Kevin Thomas who has practical experience of certificate and 2 year learners and faculty needs confirms the relevance:

The ‘hands-on’ activities that will be conducted on the SLIS server include many penetration testing techniques such as network and host port scans, password cracking, ping sweeps, network vulnerability testing, intrusion detection, denial of service attacks, malware creation and detection, operating system hardening, network traffic sniffing, keystroke logging, firewall configuration and firewall testing.  Most of these activities are currently conducted in a special classroom on campus, but the SLIS server will allow remote students to conduct these tasks in a safe, virtual environment that will not endanger their computers or the network.

Faculty should contact the ITSCEE at SPC college to gain access to test, use, copy, and contribute to the SLIS Lab. The Lab is design to reserve 25 accounts for distant faculty. These accounts will need to rotated between the interested parties.
