The goal
of the mathematics department is to provide a quality educational
experience in terms of student learning for general education and
traditional transfer by offering a full range of mathematics and
pre-engineering courses tailored to meet student needs and taught by a
high-quality, professionally-current faculty. It is our goal to
continue to foster smooth articulation between the local high schools,
the community college and the university system.
Our general education program will provide
the student a comprehensive view of the concepts and process of
mathematics and statistics that will enable the graduate to make
informed decisions in the public arena that involve mathematics and
technology. Additionally our courses are structured to assist the
student in the development of critical thinking skills, producing
mathematically literate graduates by embracing the goals of mathematics
literacy and incorporating those learning outcomes into core curriculum
offerings.
All of our courses seek to incorporate the
use of "hands on" technology focusing on the infusion of conceptual
understanding over strict knowledge of content.
When addressing transferring mathematics
and engineering majors our goal is to provide students the foundations
of knowledge and skills that will maximize their subsequent success in
discipline-based courses at a four-year transfer institution. One
resource used to accomplish this is the integration of MAPLE into the
Calculus and Differential Equations series. This incorporation of
technology is intended to help enhance the development of analytical and
critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in ones chosen field of
study. |
