The students will read Eyewitness books and choose from different themes. Also Eyewitness multi media will be viewed and used for its thematic content.

Students will continue practicing beginning volleyball skills, lead-up games and modified activities enhancing the enjoyment and understanding of the game.

Students will be “reporters” on campus reporting on various class and site activities. Each day will be a new experience in how to create a newspaper using digital photography and computers.

  • Students will participate in producing a weekly site newspaper. They will learn about concepts of print, advertising, planning and working on a deadline as well as basic computer and photography skills.

Week Five
July 6-July 10

Introduction to oceanography - The students will study Earth’s climate zones; ocean organisms, (benthic, planktonic, photosynthesis; organism adaptation; food web; and sea animals found in our seas.

  • The students will gain knowledge about the ocean’s biological make up and investigate marine habitats with a visit to Clearwater Marine Aquarium and cruise.

Week Six
July 13-July 17

The students will study the chemistry of sea water; why oceans are salty; carbonate system; and nutrients in the sea. The students test sea water samples and fresh water samples for various materials.

  • Students gain knowledge about how the ocean’s chemistry affects the Earth’s environment. The study will investigate water quality on a Tampa Bay estuary field trip.

Week Seven
July 20-July 24

The students will learn about ocean’s basin made up of sediment and rock; Florida’s limestone foundation, beaches and beach zones; and barrier islands. Students will study platectonics and Earth’s geological history.

  • Students will learn about the impact development has had on coastal regions including activities/experiments that take place on a field trip to the barrier island at Caladesi Island.

Week Eight
July 27-July 31

The final week will include physical and biological components of our area’s seas. Students will study water density, buoyancy, waves and currents in the Gulf of Mexico. Students will learn about vegetation, mangroves and sea birds.

  • Students will investigate waves and coastal organisms on a field trip to Honeymoon Island.
