Code Blue Pre-Med Camp: Be a Doctor for the summer!

St. Petersburg College will bring science to life every morning at CFK.

• We’ll start off with learning about some of the careers that involve medical training besides the usual doctor, nurse, etc.


• The kids will be keeping a notebook on these careers and what education/internships are required.


• We’ll study the 4 senses that keep us in touch with our environment and selves and make models of the skin, eye, ear, mouth and tongue, and conduct some experiments on the senses.


• The kids will learn about blood typing and conduct a little experiment using colored water to determine donors and receivers.


• Keeping bones healthy and we will build a skeleton


• How the brain works and what causes it to not function properly. We will build a Brain Cap that shows the location of the different areas of the brain and what they control.


• We will have various “visitors” who will teach about their medical careers and how to get into their fields.


• We’ll practice how to react in an emergency situation, including making a 911 call, and what should and should not be done before help arrives.


• We’ll make individual emergency escape routes for individual homes.


• We will visit Countryside Mease ER to learn what happens, and how many different people are involved, when someone comes to the ER.


• We’ll have a disaster day toward the end of the 4 weeks when the kids will show they know how to handle an emergency situation and care for injuries to different body systems - I’m going to try to get some EMS or Firefighters involved this year to make it more realistic.
