Introduction to Pilates
12 hours approved for OT, OTA, PT, PTA
This two-day workshop introduces the Pilates method of physical and mental conditioning. Pilates encourages movement early in rehabilitation. This is because its techniques minimize pain by limiting the degree of movement to that needed for achieving therapeutic effects. As rehabilitation may require, the range of motion can be further limited. A key element of the method is strengthening of the core muscles, so as to support the spine. The exercises work both sides of the body evenly. Achieving proper body alignment and symmetrical muscular development contributes to rehabilitation. This early introduction of functional exercise, (i.e. Pilates), facilitates compliance with post-rehabilitation planning which must emphasize the necessity of active exercise.
Introduction and participation give the student a practical understanding of how the Pilates format can
accommodate specific rehabilitative needs.
Supervised Pilates exercises are practiced on mats and specially designed equipment. (Comfortable clothing is required.)
