Titans slay the Lions 86-78
|
Nov. 8, 2005
St. Petersburg, FL --
The Titans went into the second half down by two
points, but the second half was an entirely different story. Led
by Michael Knight's 20 second half points (22 for the game), St.
Petersburg was able to surge out to a six points lead with 13:00 left.
However, Knight's five three pointers were too much for Florida Memorial
College to overcome. Points came from a variety a sources including the
the bench, led by Yarmaine Minnis' 9 points and 6 rebounds. Freshman
Calvin Wilson 's pulled down 10 rebounds in limited action due to foul
trouble and George Hardy led the assist charge (6).
The Titans now are 2-0 and head into the weekend
with two games versus Miami Dade Community College and Wayne State
College.

TITANS PLAY FOR THE CONFERENCE
TITLE THURSDAY
Feb 16, 2004
The second half of the season has fared
well for the Titans of St. Petersburg. Going into tomorrow's conference
finale the Titans share a conference lead with the Hawks of Hillsborough
Community College at 7-4. Two previous meetings with HCC saw the home
team winning each one. This game the Titans have the home court
advantage. With the win the Titans hope to make their third appearance
in the Florida State Junior College Tournament in four years. Earlier in
the season the Titans went through some growing pains and suffered some
sound losses. However, the young Titans shrugged off the 6-11 start and
continues to play hard.
Kenneth Williams is the team's leading
scorer at 16.5 points per game. McHugh Mattis leads the team in
rebounding average at 6.8. Paul leads the team in assists and steals
with 4 and 1.7 respectively.

MATTIS SIGNS WITH
USF
Less than a week before the early signing period
begins, the USF men's basketball team picked up its third oral
commitment, from McHugh Mattis, a 6-foot-6, 185-pound guard/forward from
St. Petersburg College.
"He plans to go to USF. He made his decision and has
told the coaches," said Mattis' father, Hugh, from the family's home
near Fort Lauderdale.
Mattis, 20, wasn't recruited heavily out of Coconut
Creek High, where he was an honorable mention all-state selection. He
has grown 3 inches since coming to SPC, where he was a second-team All-Suncoast Conference selection as a freshman for coach Earnest Crumbley.
Crumbley could not be reached for comment Thursday
night, but he said this week that Mattis was leaning toward USF. Mattis,
who was born in Jamaica and moved to the United States when he was 3,
averaged 12.5 points and 5.0 rebounds as a freshman. Defensively, he
blocked 104 shots last season.
"He wanted to go there because it's much closer to
home for him," his father said. "When I speak with coach (Robert)
McCullum, I can tell he can teach McHugh a whole lot."
The Bulls have commitments from guards Zaronn Cann of
Brandon and Chris Howard of Notre Dame Academy in Fitchburg, Mass. Cann
attended a USF scrimmage on Saturday and both are expected to sign with
USF next week.
