St. Petersburg College Volleyball

St. Petersburg College (SPC), located in St. Petersburg, Florida, has one of the premier women's volleyball programs in the state.  SPC volleyball is entering its 11th year on an up trend.  Since taking over the reins of the Lady Titans 5 years ago, Coach White has instilled a culture of constant improvement.  In 4 years, SPC has risen from 4th in the conference to 1st, from un-ranked, to ranked 11th in the country.

"We are keeping with our philosophy of continuous improvement" states Coach White, "The 2008 season should be even.  We will be better in every position and our goals will be that much higher."  Once again, the incoming class is more physical, more experienced, with more accolades then any previous recruiting class.  We have found that many great student-athletes can benefit from playing in the NJCAA.  There are several advantages, highlighted here, that can help student-athletes achieve their goals.  What matters is the height of your goals, not the path to achieve them!

Each spring brings a new training environment.  Our spring training was shifted to the beach.  Yes, when we start on February 1, a few days required sweats to practice, but by March, the weather was perfect and the beach was a great place to be.  It does not hurt that some of the best beaches for training are only a few miles from campus.

"Our kids are learning some great skills on the beach this spring.  For one, ball control must be taken to a new level.  Not only are there only two on the court, but you must deal with the wind and learn how to control the ball in the wind." commented Coach White.  "Most importantly, our Kids progressed from learning how to play on the beach to learning how to win.  This is a huge jump in the mental game because, to win on the beach, each player needs to understand the flow of the game, their strengths and their opponents’ weakness; then combine these to create wins.

Every year, we improve, try new things, and work with new kids.  The SPC Volleyball web site contains bios and full information on the team and our blog, SPC Volleyball, also has updates from time to time.  These will keep you posted on the team and feel free to contact the coaches with any questions.

The School - St. Petersburg College

St. Petersburg College is the original Community College in Florida, founded in 1927.  In 2000, SPC was granted the authority to award 4-year bachelors degrees and our name was changed from St. Petersburg Junior College to SPC.  We now have 9 Bachelors Degrees in addition to AA and AS degrees.  Most Athletes will attend SPC for two years, earn an AA degree, and then matriculate to a 4-year NCAA school.  The requirements for an AA degree are sufficiently flexible to be an effective start to any 4-year degree program.  And, in the state of Florida, graduation from a Community College guarantees admission to State Universities.  The SPC Website provides some great information on the school for prospective students.

While SPC has many campuses in Pinellas County, the Volleyball plays and takes classes at the St. Pete/Gibbs campus located at 66th Street and 5th Avenue North.  This campus dates back to the 1950's, but has been nearly 100% refurbished in the last several years including a new library that is state of the art.

St. Petersburg is one of the premier Community Colleges in the state and the country -- a great place to start your college education.  The Gibbs campus is located in a safe residential area of St. Petersburg, away from the traffic, but very close to the beach and great a Florida lifestyle.
