Don't miss out on the fun

There are lots of reasons to join this year's Wellness Challenge, not the least of which is to have some fun with your co-workers. Last year's Allstate Campus team, Guns and Hoses, had fun with their team picture. From left, Tom McKanna, Christine Pribyl, John Dressback, J.C. Brock, Chris Swift and Jamie Ferrazano (kneeling).

Former cheerleader Cory Adler-Leidersdorff prepares for Miami Dolphins reunion

Miami Dolphins perfect seasonCory Adler-Leidersdorff didn’t make her Miami High School cheerleading squad, but that didn’t stop her when she heard the fledgling Miami Dolphins were looking for cheerleaders back in the early 1970s.

She answered an ad the Dolphins had run, and she successfully made a number of cuts, becoming a member of the first group of Miami Dolphins cheerleaders. More than 1,200 girls answered the tryout ads, and June Taylor, leader of the June Taylor Dancers on the Jackie Gleason Show, was in charge of the selections.

Now Community Relations Manager for the Palladium Theater, the Florida International Museum and SPC Downtown, Adler-Leidersdorff is getting ready to attend a reunion of Dolphins players, cheerleaders and executives Dec. 6, when the Dolphins play the New England Patriots at Land Shark Stadium.

Back in the 1970s, everyone was talking about the new cheerleader squad that had been assembled by the Dallas Cowboys. The Miami Dolphins decided they needed to follow suit, so they began advertising for candidates.

“I was still in high school when I made the Miami Dolphins cheerleading squad,” Adler-Leidersdorff recalled. “There were 10 of us.”

It turned out to be a good time to be associated with the Dolphins. While the Dolphins had had a rather hapless beginning, Adler-Leidersdorff arrived in time for the team to go to two Super Bowls, and help celebrate the Dolphins’ undefeated 1972 season.

“I hadn’t made my high school squad – I was a bit of a wild child and I didn’t really fit in with the high school cheerleaders,” she said. “But we had a great time with the Dolphins, and all the women on our squad remain close friends to this day.

“I have a lot of wonderful memories, and I also still have the scars where Mercury Morris ran over me during a game.  I tell people it’s my football injury.”

It’s a memory that hasn’t been lost on Morris, either. Adler-Leidersdorff said at the first Dolphins reunion she attended, Morris approached the cheerleaders and asked to see the “the young woman I used to run over.”

According to Adler-Leidersdorff, cheerleading in the 1970s was quite different from the football cheerleading of today.

“The current cheerleaders wear teeny little outfits and boots,” she said. “They’re like Amazons. So tall and beautiful. They have their own dressing room and full time staff support from the Dolphins, while we had to dress in the Porta-Potties in the back. We were less about sex and more about football and Miami.”

Adler-Leidersdorff will be in Miami on Dec. 5 for rehearsals, and she and her cheerleading mates will take part in a not-very-strenuous routine at halftime the following day.

“I think the Dolphins are afraid to ask us to do too much,” she said. “It’s not like we’re going to have a coronary on the field, but I can understand how they might feel.  Lots of us are somebody’s grandmother!”

One thing that Adler-Leidersdorff is looking forward to is seeing some of the fans she remembers from the 1970s. Even though the Dolphins have played at different venues since those days (Adler-Leidersdorff did her cheering at the Orange Bowl), many of the old fans still come to the games, and they occupy seats in the same sections.

“A lot of the people we knew in the 1970s remembered us (at the last reunion),” she said. “People had season tickets at the Orange Bowl, and when we got to where we always stood, the same people were standing in front of us.”

Three new Research Briefs available

SPC’s Department of Institutional Research and Effectiveness has developed and published three new Research Briefs.

The Research Briefs are short publications that disseminate important information on a variety of topics that can help the college improve its performance. These topics include – but are not limited to – student achievement, state accountability measures, institutional survey results, student enrollment and faculty/adjunct compensation.

They are:

SPC Fact Book Evaluation
The SPC Fact Book is an annual document produced by IRE in electronic and paper form that’s utilized by a variety of college stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff and leadership. It includes tables and charts based on state and internal data.

The purpose of this evaluation is to review the Fact Book’s current format, clarify its purpose and gather recommendations for future versions.

A.A. Program Review Level I Data Displays (2003-04 through 2007-08)
The Community College and Technical Center Management Information Systems (CCTCMIS) provides data displays showing the Statewide University System’s (SUS) upper division performance of community college Associate of Arts (AA) graduates compared with the performance of non-transfer (native) SUS upper division students. This Research Brief focuses on five reporting years (summer, fall, and spring) of data from 2003-04 through 2007-08.

State Accountability Measures (2004 through 2008)
This brief evaluates the performance of the State Accountability Measures. In 1991, the Florida Legislature passed statewide accountability measures and defined state performance goals for each measure. College targets also were established. This brief provides the state and St. Petersburg College’s performance for the past five years, along with the state and SPC targets for each of the five accountability measures. For specific details regarding the 2007-08 Statewide Accountability measures, as well as detailed descriptions for each of the measures, please see Research Brief volume 18, number 7, entitled Statewide Accountability Performance Measures (2007-08)

All Research Briefs (since 1991) are available from the Institutional Research Web site.  They are organized chronologically and by topic area.

If you have any questions regarding the Research Briefs, please contact the Department of Institutional Research and Effectiveness at Ext. 5237.

Presidential search continues

The St. Petersburg College Board of Trustees will meet at 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at the District Office (6021 142nd Ave. N, Largo) to determine the credentials, qualities and characteristics it will seek in the next college president. Trustees also will discuss the composition, structure and appointment process of a search committee.

Carl M. Kuttler Jr. announced in July that he was retiring after 31 years as President.

At a public forum Sept. 21, the board heard from 34 community and college representatives who spoke about traits and skills they would like in a new president. On Oct 16, the board will consider that input before finalizing its expectations.

The public is welcome.

Enrolled Student Survey online

Can you hear me now

Each year, the Enrolled Student Survey gives SPC students a voice that can make a difference. The results are used to help improve the academic and support services we offer our students.

The survey is part of a collegewide assessment system aimed at delivering quality academic and support services to our students. Once again this year, the Enrolled Student Survey will be administered online. Promos linking to the survey are posted on the college home page, MySPC, ANGEL and in SPC This Week.

All SPC faculty are asked to promote the survey to students, encouraging them to make their voices heard. The survey is open through Oct. 15.

Questions about the survey should be directed to the Department of Institutional Research and Effectiveness at Ext. 5237.
