Dear College Family:
I love St. Petersburg College. That is why my decision to move on from the college presidency was not made lightly. After careful thought I have decided now is the right time. Perhaps there could be no better time.
St. Petersburg College is on solid financial footing. It has tremendous Cabinet leadership, a distinguished faculty and staff, clear direction, and the respect of colleagues and the community. The truth is this: The legacy of St. Petersburg College is YOUR legacy. Each member of the college family has contributed to its success and will continue to do so.
Change is unnerving. If any college can successfully navigate this change, it is St. Petersburg College. SPC practically wrote the book on change! Consider it just another opportunity for the college. . . It is another opportunity for me as well. Over the years, I have been approached with other career possibilities — ranging from college presidencies to the ambassador corps. Due to an abiding affection for SPC, I declined some incredible ones. The best opportunity for service was always right here because, after all, this is where I came after being told in high school that a college education wasn’t for me: This is the place that truly changed my life.
The college Board of Trustees will select the best person for the presidency. The college is dear to me and I will do all I can to make sure SPC loses no ground in this transition. I will be working with the Board over the next few months on transition and timetables. Meanwhile, I look forward to taking a breather and the pursuing a second career with gusto.
It has been my honor and pleasure to serve St. Petersburg College for 43 years (12 years as dean and vice president; 31 years as president). Thank you for allowing me to work alongside you.
Warmest regards,
Carl
