The
Board of Directors of the St. Petersburg College Alumni
Association, Inc., annually selects the most outstanding graduating
sophomore student for the Apollo Award. Any
degree-seeking student completing the requirements for graduation may
apply to receive the Apollo Award at the spring ceremony. Students
who graduated at any of the commencement ceremonies since the
preceding spring ceremony also are eligible.
The
winner of the highly prestigious Apollo Award receives an Apollo
Plaque, a scholarship check for $1,000, a lifetime membership in the
SPC Alumni Association, and a one-year honorary appointment to the SPC Alumni Association Board of Directors. His/her
name will be inscribed on a permanent trophy at the college.
The
criteria for selection are:
- At least a 3.25 GPA.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities.
- Been involved in college activities.
- Participated in community service.
Also
considered during the screening/judging process is the student's
statement of why he/she believes he/she deserves the honor, as well as
the letter(s) of recommendation submitted on the student's behalf.
Nominations
may be submitted to each site's screening committee (through the
campus Student Activities Office) by a full-time or part-time employee
of SPC, an alumnus of SPC or a currently enrolled student. Each
nomination must be received by the screening committee no later than March
1, 2008. The application must include the student's name,
campus, and the name and title of the person making the nomination.
Each year, the deadlines will be announced at least three (3) weeks
ahead of the submissions deadline. The announcement will be placed in
the weekly employee newsletter, in each campus' newsletter for
students, on the SPC Web site, on college bulletin boards, and
through e-mail notices to key SPC faculty and staff.
The screening committees will ask
nominees to prepare dossiers containing the following:
- Apollo Award Application form, completed and signed;**
- official transcript of all classes taken while at SPC; and
- no more than three letters of recommendation.
Applications
must be submitted to the screening committee by the specified
deadline. No materials will be accepted after this deadline. The
deadline will be announced each year at least three (3) weeks in
advance.
**Only official application forms obtained from the screening committees
(through the campus Student Activities Office) or this web site will be considered.
