(4/21/98 AAHESGIT #93. Approx. 150 lines from Charles Kerns
of Stanford Learning Lab <kernsc@leland.Stanford.EDU>

Kerns describes a relatively new "Learning Lab" at Stanford and a new position: the "Curriculum Deployment Manager." This is an excellent example of the kind of job posting that fits the purposes of this AAHESGIT listserver. The message begins with a brief introduction of the Stanford Univ. Learning Lab; Mission: "to enhance the personal learning experience of all Stanford students and to create a model for the judicious deployment of pedagogically-informed technology for learning and knowledge management." Brief examples of some of the Lab's work are included.

You said in a recent message that you do not routinely post job announcements but I think the one below reveals much of the methodology of the new Learning Lab at Stanford University.

I am most interested in learning about other innovation centers on college campuses, along with their methods for effecting and evaluating change. The Stanford Learning Lab is focusing on assessment in the iterative refinement of pedagogically-informed learning technologies. The Lab will be posting another position for the Associate Director of Assessment, shortly.

Curriculum Deployment Manager Stanford Learning Lab

Introduction

The Stanford University Learning Laboratory (SLL) was established in 1997 by President Casper and the Commission on Technology in Teaching and Learning. Its mission is to enhance the personal learning experience of all Stanford students and to create a model for the judicious deployment of pedagogically-informed technology for learning and knowledge management.

Situated outside any discipline and departmental boundaries, the SLL serves as a strategic center and advisor for the university as a whole, testing educational options in order to inform, guide, and give early warning to those in the university who must respond to the changing educational environment.

The SLL leads faculty in action research and development of innovative instructional methods, student-centered learning techniques, and pedagogically-informed technologies, both in Stanford courses and in other campus learning environments and organizations. In carrying out its studies, the SLL prototypes curricula and technological support systems such as web-based discovery environments, collaborations tools, and rapid feedback diagnostics. In all projects, the Lab conducts a comprehensive assessment using both qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate the project's effectiveness, utility, and impact.

Projects that have been done in the first year of the SLL's operation include developing web-centered curricula in a new, introductory humanities course, designing an instrumented classroom, planning for a cohort of students to utilize digital portfolios as they progress through Stanford and implementation of an on-line diagnostic questioning tool for a large Human Biology lecture course.

Responsibilities:

The Curriculum Deployment Manager will be a member of the Learning Lab's strategic planning team. Working with this team, the Manager will evaluate project opportunities, prepare project proposals for internal and external funding and assist in assessing and prioritizing project resources. In short, the Curriculum Deployment Manager will help define a maturing vision and mission for the Learning Lab.

The Manager will lead several project operations teams. Reporting to the Associate Director of Curriculum Deployment, he/she will have primary responsibility for planning, coordinating and managing the lab efforts in several concurrent projects. In this capacity he/she will:

Manage Learning Lab projects, with primary responsibility for all project operations including planning, development, and deployment in projects that test learning methods and pedagogically informed technologies in Stanford courses and other learning environments.

Develop detailed plans for Learning Lab projects, in a process which starts with preliminary discussions with faculty, includes preparation of both internal and external proposals, and results in specifications of goals, methods, staffing, schedules, milestones and budget.

Facilitate interactions with campus administrative, service and academic organizations, such as the Academic Technology Lab, Residential Computing, Academic Text and Data Services, Center for Professional Development and the Center for Teaching and Learning to support Learning Lab projects.

Collaborate with the Learning Lab assessment team to prepare and carry out evaluation plans for lab projects. Work with the Technology Team to design prototypes, develop testing plans, and carry out usability studies.

Directly manage SLL students and staff who produce digital media, create web pages, provide technical support to students, and manage Learning Lab facilities.

In addition, the Manager will take part in distributing information, methods, and software to the campus, academia, and other interested communities. He/She will participate in the professional organizations of practitioners and researchers involved with learning technologies, transfer issues, and curricular development in higher education.

Advise the Learning Lab Directorate on new learning technologies, learning and curricular innovations, technology transfer issues and technical support systems.

Disseminate information to faculty, curricular and technical support staff, teaching assistants, and students about the use of learning technology in seminars, workshops, on-line forums and web-sites.

Plan and manage the distribution of learning technology systems and modules developed and/or evaluated by the Learning Lab to the campus community.

Consult with faculty about making use of learner-centered courses, adopting pedagogically informed learning technologies, and reforming curricula.

Report activities and findings to practitioner and research organizations such as EDUCOM and SIGCHI. Assist in the preparation of text, video and digital media documentaries and reports.

Qualifications Five years experience supporting the adoption of innovative pedagogies and learning technologies in academia including:

Managing large curricular innovation and learning technology implementation projects.

Directing curricular and technical support of faculty and students as they adopt computer-based educational technologies in their learning and teaching.

Operation and management of instructional technology consulting centers, curriculum development labs and learning laboratories.

Consulting directly with faculty about curricular innovation and instructional technology adoption.

Training faculty, teaching assistants, and students in the use of educational technologies. Experience Preparing curricular support and technical training materials including handouts, web-pages, and workshops.

Expert knowledge of learning and curricular technologies such as web-based collaboration environments, web-based curriculum support systems, digital portfolios, and peer critique/annotation software tools.
