Retreat Demonstrations
DEMONSTRATION ONE: CU-SeeMe
In the demonstrations, two computers were linked via Ethernet. By
incorporating the two Color QuickCam's participants were able to
have conversations with one-another using the computers. The demonstration
was setup on two different computers. The first one was the Apple Power
Macintosh 8100/80. The other copmuter was the Dell 166mhz laptop computer,
using the Windows '95 operating system.
The CU-SeeMe program is available over the internet at the White Pine Software site. The demonstration is available for download over the internet. The demonstration software only allows you to run the program for fifteen minutes before you are "dumped" out of the program. A shareware version is also available, but it only runs in black and white.
DEMONSTRATION TWO: Web CT
WebCT is the server software program which has been purchased for College-wide use. Training classes are being given for faculty who want to use the web to publish course information or teach web-based courses. For further information please contact Sandy Mills at millss@email.spjc.cc.fl.us or visit the SPJC WebCT site at Instructional Computing WebCT Overview or visit the WebCT information page at http://homebrew.cs.ubc.ca/webct/
DEMONSTRATION THREE: BEAT 1
The Basic Enforcement Academy Training program is an interactive multimedia simulation of working on police patrol. It puts you in a patrol vehicle on the street and requires you to make decisions and observations. A web site with more details and samples of the program is at http://BEAT.h/BEATTOP.HTM. For further information contact Mike O'Berry, the project director, at oberrym@email.spjc.cc.fl.us.
DEMONSTRATION FOUR: Vet Tech On-line
The veterinary technology program is available by distance learning. We use America Online as the major means of communication with students. Courses meet for a live chat session once per week for the semester. These are scheduled in the evening since most students work full time in the daytime. In addition to the live chats the courses have bulletin boards and there is considerable email communication. Students must work in veterinary hospitals at least 20 hours per week in order to have a place to learn and practice their skills. We have developed a web site with many medical images at http://hec.spjc.cc.fl.us/chip/vt1.html
DEMONSTRATION FIVE: Just in Time Learning (JITL)
The Just-in-Time Learning is a modular multimedia interactive system for teaching skills. The idea of the system is to use a template that includes the steps with illustrations and text, a fast and slow track, good examples and bad examples, drill & practice, reference information, and testing. View a rough draft of a module on the skill of putting a dog on an exam table.
DEMONSTRATION SIX: Academic On-line, Mathematics Department
Contact Danny Clark or Shannon Kenworthy at the Mathematics Department on Clearwater Campus for further information about this modular multimedia math coaching & tutoring software.
DEMONSTRATION SEVEN: Library
Online Research Tutorial -- through the S.P.J.C. Library Homepage at
http://www.spjc.cc.fl.us/0/lib/home.html
Presentation by Donna Kelly and Jayson Nestler, Librarians
The Online Research Tutorial is designed as an easy guide to online research for students, distance learners, or those unfamiliar with new information technologies. It attempts to identify, organize, and provide links to various types of sources available online. Brief tutorials explain how to evaluate different formats of information for credibility, balance, and substance.
