Focused Discussion: Helping Students Make AAA's:
- Practical Strategies for Fostering Hearty
Learners
- Helping foster student heartiness has become an
imperative for today's community college instructors and
administrators. Research and practice demonstrates that
we serve our students best by helping them develop a sort
of learning heartiness that can empower them to engage
their various challenges within and beyond the community
college. In this session, participants will explore the
attitude, alignment, and action characteristics that have
been linked to hearty learners. In addition, attendees
will discuss strategies that foster these characteristics
in and out of the classroom.
- Target Audience: Clearwater Student Services
Personnel (though others are certainly welcome.)

Community Colleges Winning through Innovation: Taking on
the Changes and Choices of Leadership in the 21st
Century.
- As part of an initiative to better serve community
colleges, IBM and PeopleSoft commissioned the League for
Innovation to prepare a research piece on the challenges
facing community colleges as they approach the
twenty-first century. After an extensive review of
literature and a survey of over 500 community college
presidents, the study authors (Milliron and Leach)
outlined seven key trends and synthesized a set of key
choices likely to face most community colleges as they
move into the next millenium. In this session, the
audience will join in an exploration of these key
challenges and look at choices for community college
leaders as they move forward in this time of exciting
change.

Instruction
- This presentation explores the promise and pitfalls
of technology use in the community college. The emphasis
is placed on the Technology available to educators, the
learning outcomes that have been associated with these
technologies, and the continuing efforts to maintain the
human touch---or a sense of Community---in the age of
technology. The material presented in this workshop was
developed as part of a national research project
culminating in a book to be published in early 1998. The
book is entitled, Information Technology in the
Community College: The Big Picture.

Dr. Gerardo E. De Los
Santos
Dean of Communications, Richland College, TX
|

|
Richland College, which opened in 1972, is the largest of
the seven DCCCD colleges, serving approximately 13,500
college credit and 10,000 non-credit students per semester.
Having earned an Associate of Arts degree from Mesa
Community College in Mesa, Arizona, which served as his
educational foundation, de los Santos eventually went on to
earn a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the
Community College Leadership Program at The University of
Texas at Austin. Before assuming the Dean of Communications
at Richland College, de los Santos served as Special
Assistant to the President (Richland College) and Special
Assistant to the Vice President of Academic and Student
Development (Richland College). In addition to his Dean
responsibilities, de los Santos supervises the following
Richland College programs and processes: Fast Track
Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree Optional Program; the
production of the credit class schedules; the Honors
Program; the Global Studies Progra; and the Study Abroad
Program
FAST TRACK PRESENTATION OVERVIEW
The Fast Track is a new, accelerated method of completing
the Associate of Arts and Sciences or Arts and Sciences in
Business transfer degrees within one year. Courses and
electives required for the completion of the Associate
Degrees are offered over twelve, four-week terms spanning a
a twelve month period. The Fast Track Degree Option is not
designed to replace the traditional academic semester
schedule, but to offer more flexible options and entry
points for students. This intensified delivery format was
implemented less than two years ago at Richland College of
the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD), yet it
is already proving to be a very successful option for a
growing number of students. In his presentation, Dr. de los
Santos will overview the Fast Track Program development
process, format and structure, implementation, and initial
program assessment.
