John Beherends spoke at the Association of Veterinary Technician Educators symposium in Minneapolis on August 5th, 1999. Following the symposium he sent me the diagrams below and some explanation of them.

 

"Core Ideologies are the most important part of the strategic planning process. The core ideologies are those stories and legends that make up the history of the College. They are to be written by those people who have been around the College as well as those who have gone through the College and experienced or been part of the stories. It is not to be written exclusively by people in leadership.10-15 ideologies would be appropriate."

"The vision is what you want to become. The mission is what you do." These make up the purpose. "The purpose is written by the leadership of the College."

"The core values (4-6) are identified and defined by the rank and file of the College. Students can well be included in the process."

"Goals, action steps, schedule and accountability are all day to day activities that are govenered by the levels below. Each has it's own time line."

The concept of alignment is also helpful, as described below.
