OSHA REQUIREMENTS

For

FIRST AID KITS

Departments may provide first aid kits for employees to use for self-treatment provided that the following OSHA requirements for maintaining first aid kits are satisfied:

1.      The department must develop a written policy (and explain it to all employees in the department) that clarifies that first aid kits are provided for "self treatment".

2.   First aid treatment provided by any employee on a voluntary basis is done so as a "Good Samaritan" and the College assumes no responsibility for the exposure of that employee to infectious bloodborne pathogens.

3.      A log must be maintained with each first aid kit and contain the following information that must be recorded by each employee who uses the kit:

1.      The type of injury

2.      How the injury was treated

3.      A list of the supplies that were used.

4.      The first aid kit log does not eliminate the College's requirement to complete and submit an Accident/Incident Report, form RM 402

4.   Provide several pairs of disposable gloves with each first aid kit.

5.   Someone in each department must be assigned the responsibility for ensuring the first aid kits are properly supplied at all times.

6.   All bandages and other materials saturated with human blood or body fluids must be disposed of in accordance with the College’s biohazardous waste policies.

If first aid is included as a part of any employees’ responsibilities, the following must also be provided:

1.      First aid training (American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR at least).

2.      The employee(s) must be included in the College’s Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan, receive bloodborne pathogen training, and be given the opportunity to receive the Hepatitis B vaccination series.
