Why Recycle?
It is vital to recycle and
reduce waste here in Pinellas County because we have only one
landfill. Recycling is also important for social, economic, and
environmental reasons. Did you know that over 70% of the
waste in Pinellas County could be recycled? Recycling,
along with waste reduction and waste diversion programs, plays an
essential role in conserving landfill space and sustaining our solid
waste management system.
Curbside and Drop-Off
Recycling
In Pinellas County, all citizens have access
to recycling through curbside or drop-off programs for items such as
aluminum, cardboard, glass, newspaper, mixed paper, plastic, steel,
and yard waste. See our handy
listing of recycling programs by neighborhood for a one-page
summary of local recycling programs. You can also view a map showing area recycling opportunities (click on
“Information About Your Property” in the center blue box).

Used Motor Oil Recycling Attention, do-it-yourself oil changers, the County has a used motor oil recycling program. You can take used motor oil to any of over 40 locations (such as Autozone or Advance Auto Parts stores) to be recycled. Recycling used motor oil helps protect our environment from pollution and decreases our dependence on foreign oil supplies. |
Yard Waste Recycling
Through the yard
waste recycling program, leaves, branches, and other forms of
yard waste are processed into mulch that is available to the public
free of charge. Pinellas County recycles over 100,000 tons of yard
waste each year. There are 20 free mulch sites located around the
County.
Electronics and Chemical
Recycling
The electronics
and chemical recycling program provides a free, safe way to
recycle harmful waste such as batteries, pesticides, or old
computers. Residents can transport waste to the Household
Electronics and Chemical Collection Center (HEC3) or to a mobile
collection event in their area. Residents can swap products such
as paint and cleansers at the Swap
Shop.
Demolition and Construction Debris
Recycling
The Pinellas County reef construction program is an innovative way to
recycle demolition and construction debris such as old bridges or
boats. Clean concrete and steel debris are used to construct
artificial reefs. These underwater reefs create valuable habitats
for fish and other sea life, which in turn benefits fishermen and
divers.
Business Recycling
An
integral part of Pinellas County’s recycling program is business
recycling. County staff will help businesses save money by
implementing waste reduction and recycling initiatives. Staff will
conduct free waste audits for businesses or non-profit
organizations. Collection events are provided for businesses with
hazardous waste.
School Paper
Recycling
Teachers and students can now participate in
the County’s school
paper recycling program. Pinellas County has bins available to
all public schools. Currently, 140 schools and offices are
participating. Some schools recycle white paper only, while others
recycle mixed paper. Recycling paper at school saves resources and
encourages children to make recycling a habit.

Buying Recycled
Products Recycling only works when you buy products made with recycled materials. This "closes the loop" between simply collecting recyclables and actually recycling them by creating markets for the materials. Products commonly made with recycled materials include paper, plastic lumber, toilet paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, and steel cans. Look for "made with recycled materials" or "made with post-consumer materials" on the products you buy. |

Recycle Regatta Rules the WavesA total of 170 students and 54 boats competed in the Recycle Regatta races on Saturday, April 30th. The boats made of recycled materials were so unique that creativity, luck, and good humor took precedence over winning.
