Safety and Health Videos/Training Aids

 

The videotapes listed below are available for use by site Workplace Safety Committees and any college department to use for safety meetings or departmental training.

The videos may be borrowed for a 2-week period (10 workdays).

#1. Anatomy of an Accident                                                                                17 minutes

Shows the importance of recognizing the cause of an accident. Are accidents due to chance or bad luck or are they caused by the actions of people who do not recognize and correct unsafe conditions or unsafe actions? The video shows the accident and then the elements that constitute its anatomy.

 

#2. Back to Basics                                                                                                15 minutes

Program discusses manual material handling and tests the viewer’s present knowledge, reinforces existing training and introduces important new concepts for preventing back injuries.

 

#3. Crisis on Campus: Will Your Emergency Plan Work?                               60 minutes

Teleconference conducted by the Dallas County Community College and sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges. Provides guidance on developing effective emergency plans for responding to emergencies, natural disasters, workplace violence and terrorist acts.

 

#4. Documentation of Safety Efforts - #291                                                       11 minutes

OSHA standards require careful written documentation of employee safety & health training. Includes the following topics:

When should you attempt to use a fire extinguisher to fight a small fire? Provides discussion and demonstration of the proper selection and use of portable fire extinguishers.

The video reminds employees how often they use hand tools in their jobs, as well as at home. They are cautioned that while these tools help us significantly in what we do, every tool presents special hazards. A statewide teleconference conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and U.S. Centers for Disease Control provides guidance in protecting mail handlers from exposure to chemical and biological agents and explosive devices.

Emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy back. Discusses a variety of materials handling techniques. Video is applicable to all occupations and off-the-job settings.

Produced by the Florida Department of Health. Shows correct procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazard waste in Florida.

#33. Using Powered Pallet Movers                                                                     13 minutes

Describes different types of powered industrial handtrucks and the dangers presented by their use. Basic operator concerns are addressed such as the pre-use inspection, general safety practices, and personal protective equipment. The proper method for lifting and moving a load is described in a step-by-step manner.

 

#34. Working Safely & Effectively in a Biosafety Cabinet                               10 minutes

Explains and demonstrates how biosafety cabinets should be used by laboratory staff to work safely and effectively at the BL2 to BL3 levels. It describes the process laboratory staff should follow while organizing their materials, turning on and loading the cabinet, working in the cabinet, and removing materials and shutting down the cabinet.

This video encourages viewers to consider the many dangers that are associated with using powered hand tools. It discusses the benefits of working safely with powered hand tools on and off the job. Topics include avoiding dangers, staying out of the way of tools, proper use of PPE, pre-use inspection of tools and good housekeeping.

Helps employees remember the importance of basic hand tool safety and to avoid the complacency that often accompanies long-term use of hand tools. Reviews hand tool safety, general principles and safe practices.

Knives and blades pose some of the most serious tool safety hazards. This video teaches the importance of following proper safety procedures when handling sharp objects. Transmission of dangerous bloodborne pathogens (BBPs) can be prevented through effective cleaning and disposal of potentially infectious material. This program, designed specifically for custodial staff, examines common types of BBPs, ways to reduce risk of exposure, work practice controls, use of PPE and other steps to prevent exposure to BBPs.

Every year, approximately 400,000 office workers suffer on-the-job injuries. This program shows how working in an office is a lot like being in the jungle because the dangers are hidden and subtle. The program discusses methods necessary to control hazards, prevent injuries, and how to formulate emergency plans.

#49 Electrical Safety: Beware The Bite!                                                                        20 minutes

A sudden and unexpected electrical shock is like the bite of a poisonous snake! This program shows employees how to protect themselves from this controllable hazard and what to do if danger strikes. The video discusses electrical conductivity, safe work practices, lockout/tagout, PPE, and emergency response.

 

#50 PPE: Don’t Start Work Without It                                                              13 minutes

How do you select the correct PPE for each job? Different types of PPE are required to protect the different body parts from physical injury or unacceptable exposure to hazardous materials. This program discusses proper selection and use of PPE that is designed to protect the eyes, face, hearing, head, hands and feet.

Uncontrolled energy is like a caged wild animal, ready to escape and attack at the first opportunity. This program examines the many types of energy, kinetic, potential, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and pressurized liquids and gases, which must be controlled by lock and key when performing maintenance and repair work.

 

#52 Safety Awareness II: Real Accidents, Real Stories                                   14 minutes

In this emotionally charged video, injured workers tell their stories about how they became complacent about their safety and sustained serious life impacting injuries.

 

#53 High Impact – Power Tool Safety                                                                18 minutes

This graphic video reminds portable power tool users about key safety issues and makes them aware of the painful injuries that result from the unsafe use of power tools.

 

#54 Operating Forklifts Safely                                                                            20 minutes

This program provides viewers with the information required to prevent accidents and injuries associated with forklift operations. Topics include: 1) How stability is affected by a load, 2) Routine forklift inspections, 3) Lifting, Carrying and placing loads, 4) Safe driving techniques and 5) Working near pedestrians and other forklifts.

 

#55 It’s Up To Me                                                                                               14 minutes

When asked about preventing workplace injuries, most workers know the things that should be done, but feel “someone else” will do them. This program makes clear that our standard excuses such as “I thought someone else would do it” or “That’s not my job” are unacceptable when it comes to preventing injuries. Using stanzas from the poem “It’s Up To Me”, this compelling video stresses the importance of reporting and correcting unsafe conditions because an injury free workplace is dependent upon each and every worker doing his or her part.

 

#56 Lead Safety for Firearms                                                                             14 minutes

Anyone who uses firearms in the course of their work, for hunting or target practice or works on a firing range will benefit from the information in this video. The video discusses the hazards of lead, how lead can enter the body, symptoms of lead poisoning, how to avoid the dangers of contamination in both indoor and outdoor firing ranges and proper cleanup methods.

Lockout/tagout procedures are a sequence of events that are executed to control the release of unwanted, hazardous energy. The lockout/tagout system provides protection for everyone that uses or maintains energized equipment. The success of lockout/tagout depends on each individual’s knowledge, understanding and use of locks and tags to prevent injuries associated with hazardous energy.

#60 One Will Die: The John Martin Story                                                         20 minutes

The choices we make each day can have a huge impact on ourselves and others. Something as simple as using PPE or refusing to follow an unsafe co-worker can prevent tragedy. Through a real life tragedy, this video provides valuable safety lessons about off-job distractions, speaking up when co-workers take risks, the consequences of ignoring safe work practices, the importance of wearing appropriate PPE and allowing co-workers to influence our decisions about safety.

From finding survivors to restoring power, recovery teams at natural and man-made disasters have important and hazardous jobs to do. This video provides safety and healthy guidance for workers who may be involved in the cleanup and repair work that inevitably follow hurricanes, chemical spills, explosions, and other disasters. Video discusses assessing the scene for hazards, operating equipment safely, handling human remains and personal protective equipment.

 

#62 Groundskeeping Safety: Be A Pro!                                                 17 Minutes

Professional groundskeepers know that maintaining lawns, trees and shrubs requires the use of potentially dangerous equipment and chemicals. This video teaches how to avoid accidents by thinking before acting. Video demonstrates the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), tractors, riding mowers, push mowers, trim and brush-cutting equipment and blowers. It explains the importance of using checklists for safety and hazardous materials.
