Insurance Benefits at SPC
St. Petersburg College pays for the majority of health, dental and life insurance coverage for full-time employees and part-time employees. Premiums for basic and optional insurance coverage are payroll deducted. In addition, employees and their covered dependents do not pay for many routine, preventive exams. See the list of exams that are covered at 100%.
For benefits enrollment periods and eligibility criteria for dependents, spouses and domestic partners, see the following information.

Aetna medical insurance
St. Petersburg College offers three types of health insurance for budgeted college employees through Aetna.
- Aetna Select Health Insurance – Low potential out-of-pocket expenses that are the benefit of staying within the Aetna Open Access Select network of doctors and other providers
- Aetna POS (Point of Service) II – The more expensive of the two traditional plans with the ability to go out of the Aetna network for a higher fee
- Aetna Open Access Select with Health Savings Account (HSA) - A high deductible health insurance with significantly lower payroll-deducted premiums paired with a Health Savings Account
Dependent coverage is available. Aetna plans do not require employees to select a network primary care physician (PCP), though choosing a PCP is recommended. Coverages are effective on the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
Prescription drug coverage
Prescription drug coverage is included with your Aetna health insurance. Aetna also offers Prescription Home Delivery services, which offer three months of prescription drugs for the price of two months.
Dental coverage
Employee-only dental coverage is offered at no cost through Aetna. The self-funded dental plan, modeled after SPC’s self-insured medical plan, gives employees access to a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plan. Employees can see licensed dentists in or out of the Aetna network.
Life insurance
Offered through Aetna, the college provides life insurance equal to twice an employee’s base salary. Employees may pay for increased coverage as well as coverage for spouses, domestic partners and eligible children. A medical questionnaire may be required for underwriting purposes.
