POSITION TITLE: Academic Advisor – Baccalaureate Programs

DEPARTMENT: Counseling & Advisement             SITE: Various

SALARY SCHEDULE: Senior Career                        GRADE: 6

BASIC FUNCTION:

The basic function of the Academic Advisor is to provide perspective and current students academic guidance by demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of and communicating effectively with students, faculty, and staff the choice of academic courses needed to accomplish the students' academic goals.  This is to be accomplished by working closely with and/or under the direction of the Baccalaureate Specialist.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Advises local and online students concerning the choice of academic courses to meet their goals in the baccalaureate degree programs.
• Assists in the development and maintenance of databases for the assigned program(s).
• Refers students to campus and/or community resources for any problem which needs to be examined other than academic, such as vocational testing, personal counseling, etc.
• Explains the prerequisite requirements and course sequences to students for the placement in academic courses.  
• Assists students in registration procedures.
• Assists the Baccalaureate Specialist with new student orientations.
• Conveys accurate and current academic information to students, faculty and staff.
• Participates in off-campus functions such as radio promotions, information booths, presentations, etc.
• Follows federal, state, college and department guidelines that relate to the job.
• Performs related duties as required.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Associate's Degree. Bachelor's Degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Four (4) years experience in a college in student services, student development or related area.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of SPC academic departments and programs. Understands and uses available technology, materials and tools as related to the job. Knowledge of sentence structure. Knowledge of word usage. Skill in reading comprehension. Skill in proofreading. Knowledge of basic mathematics. Ability to operate data entry equipment, relational databases (i.e. PeopleSoft), e-mail, word processing software, and electronic spreadsheets. Verbal and written communications skills. Human relations skills.
