BASIC
FUNCTION:
Provides
leadership and assistance designed to support students achieve academic,
career, and life goals. Counselors work collaboratively with campus
administrators, faculty and academic chairs, and student affairs leaders in the
delivery of student programs and reviews.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Demonstrates
leadership in serving as a student development specialist, student
advocate, and consultant to faculty and staff.
- Conducts
accurate academic advising sessions.
Helps students think critically in resolving conflicts, solving
problems, and making decisions.
- Assists
students with personal issues hindering academic success.
- Facilitates
students’ career planning and decision making. Administers and interprets career
assessment instruments such as the Personal Empowerment by Type (PET),
Myers-Briggs, etc.
- Develops,
coordinates, and implements retention programs to assist students who are
below academic standards, including but not limited to, students enrolled
in two or more preparatory courses, on probation, suspension, dismissal,
etc.
- Serves
as liaison with academic departments, attends college-wide articulation
meetings, and serves on college-wide committees.
- Assists
with college “critical response” situations, and referral to community
resources.
- Provides
assistance with college-wide and special community outreach activities.
- In
cooperation with Enrollment Management, participates in community and
state recruitment activities and coordinates high school visits in the
respective campus service area to conduct group information sessions
including the available resources at SPC.
- Collaborates
with the Career Development Specialist to develop presentations on
employment-related topics.
- Conducts
Student Employee Orientation training for student workers and annually
review and recommend revisions to the College’s online and face to face
orientations for new students.
- Organizes
and facilitates special projects such as “You’re Closer Than You Think”
that focus on students who completed 45+ credits but have not completed a
degree.
- Coordinates
and facilitates information forums for targeted populations.
- Attends
college-wide and professional growth training opportunities.
- Performs
related duties as required.
EDUCATIONAL
REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s
degree in Counseling or a Master’s degree including 18 graduate hours in
Counseling.
EXPERIENCE
REQUIREMENTS:
Experience
in university/college counseling and experience in consultation. Experience
in college admissions or high school college counseling, teaching experience
are plusses.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILL
REQUIREMENTS
Necessary
skills include excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong
organizational ability, computer skills and the ability to meet
deadlines.
The ideal
candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational
skills; familiarity with the goals, objectives, and mission of an independent
college preparatory school; the ability to respond effectively to the needs of
a diverse and demanding student and parent population; knowledge of colleges,
their academic programs, admission policies, and financial policies and
procedures.
