POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Emergency Management / Fire Science Instructor in Charge

DEPARTMENT: EAM SITE: AC

SALARY SCHEDULE: Instructional GRADE: N/A

BASIC FUNCTION:

A faculty member at SPC has the primary function of instruction. Secondary functions include assisting the college in developing and maintaining a quality program of instruction, providing service to the college and continuing professional development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

v  Fosters academic excellence in teaching and learning.

v  Supports the community college philosophy through commitment to success of students with diverse goals, backgrounds and learning styles.

v  Instructs students in accordance with college policies, procedures and approved curricula.

v  Uses out-of-class duty hours effectively for class preparation, assisting students and participating in department/college activities.

v  Serves the college through any of the following: (a) committee membership, (b) curriculum development, (c) development of innovative instruction, (d) sponsorship of student organizations, (e) representation of the college in professionally related community activities, and (f) special projects.

v  Supports college extracurricular functions.

v  Maintains currency in teaching field(s) through professional development and scholarly activities.

v  Demonstrates a professional, cooperative and considerate attitude toward students, colleagues and staff.

v  Performs related duties as required.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

a. Faculty teaching Fire Science and Emergency Administration and Management courses at the undergraduate level must possess a doctoral or a master’s degree in the teaching discipline (subject area) or a master’s degree with a concentration in the teaching discipline (a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline/subject area).

 b. Faculty teaching associate degree courses designed for transfer to a baccalaureate degree must possess a doctoral or a master’s degree in the teaching discipline (subject area) or a master’s degree with a concentration in the teaching discipline (a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline/subject area).

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Teaching experience preferred for all instructor positions. A minimum of five years related work experience preferred for the Fire Science program. Certification by the Florida Fire Board of Training and Standards as an Instructor III is a requirement for this position.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

A distinguished record of excellence in professional or teaching career.  Demonstrated ability to work with Industry, faculty, staff and the community.  Specific areas of interest include but not limited to: course preparation and seminar development, knowledge of Fire Science and Emergency Administration and Management (EAM) and legal issues related to Fire Science and EAM. The ability to implement a marketing strategy is expected. Strength and experience in On-Line course development and coordination. Managerial experience preferred. Written and oral communications skills; computer skills; assessment expertise.
