POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Transfer and Support Counselor (academic)

DEPARTMENT: Special Programs, Student Support Services           SITE: SPG/CL

BASIC FUNCTIONS: 

Responsible for identifying and coordinating service and activities of the Student Support Services program which will provide economically disadvantaged, first generation students who have an identified need for academic, social and financial support with the services that will enable them to complete their preferred degree program at the College, transfer in good standing to a university, and as a result of participation in the Program, become efficacious learners and independent adults.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify and provide students who are Student Support Services eligible information concerning the opportunities available, the requirements for eligibility for enrollment, specific courses, special services, and transfer to state university system. 
  • Develop an individual development plan for each assigned Student Support Services participant. 
  • Assist in the identification and development of supplementary services, adaptation of equipment, remedial courses, guidance and counseling activities and supportive personnel for Student Support Services Program participants. 
  • Monitor class progress and meet with participants who might be at-risk for withdrawal. 
  • Help the participants explore the option of, apply to and access the necessary services at the university. 
  • Identify the financial resources to enable them to complete their education debt-free or with the least amount of debt possible. 
  • Identify and coordinate services with other agencies providing services to students who are members of special populations to eliminate duplication of services. 
  • Identify and coordinate assessment services for Student Support Services Program participants.     
  • Provide individual and group counseling-related functions to participants. 
  • Instruct Success Skills course. 
  • Perform related duties as required to meet the needs of Student Support Services Program participants.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Masters in Counseling or a Masters degree including 18 graduate hours in Counseling or a Masters degree with a minimum of 5 years experience working with low income, disabled and/or academically at-risk college students.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum of one year experience working with academically at-risk college students. Experience with coordination of program at the post secondary level. Experience in implementing Student Support Services or similar projects preferred. 

TECHNICAL SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of computer applications desirable; evidence of good communications, interpersonal and administrative skills.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Evidence of having overcome disadvantages (e.g., disability, first generation, financial need, academically at risk, or other barriers) similar to the population being served required.
