Mission of SPC Libraries:

The Michael M. Bennett Libraries provide library materials and services  particularly suited to the aims and curriculum of the college and for personal growth enrichment.   In addition to the general book collection, the library provides reference services, current and back issues of periodicals, electronic indexes, and databases, pamphlets and documents, audiovisual materials, and art prints and sculpture. SPC libraries use the LINCC (Library Information Network for Community Colleges) online library system to access and circulate materials.  Audiovisual materials are available for use in the libraries, and certain listening and viewing materials such as telecourse videotapes are circulated to students. Facilities are available for disabled users.

The libraries are staffed by professional librarians, career library employees, student workers and volunteers. Individual and group instruction in library use is available, and printed information is also provided.  Students are urged to acquaint themselves with the regulations which have been established in the interest of all who use the libraries. These policies, along with other information designed to aid the student, are found in the student Library Handbook and other printed materials available in the libraries.

Photo ID/Library Cards:

Students should obtain photo identification cards at their home campuses or at the Health Education Center prior to the beginning of classes. This card also serves as a library card. Students are financially responsible for all library materials charged on their ID cards. The ID card is used to gain admission to the student computer labs and wellness centers as well as to college activities.

Borrowing Policies -- Circulation Privileges for Students

Borrowing Materials

Students may check out books for two weeks. There is a limit of five books from one particular subject area. Books may be renewed twice as long as no one else is waiting for them. Telephone renewal is allowed when materials are not overdue.  The library will try to accommodate students who have unusual needs.

A variety of academic and recreational videotapes are available for student check out. Most of these go out for one or two days at a time.

Reserve shelves at each SPC library hold various textbooks, readings, and videos that support particular coursework. These materials may be borrowed for use within the library.

Borrowing Procedure

Students are expected to have a current SPC photo ID to borrow materials. The libraries also can use a driver's license or other official picture ID, but the process is more cumbersome. Full borrowing privileges are extended to currently enrolled students in good standing. Members of the SPC Alumni Association, most students at public universities in the state of Florida, and patrons with a Pinellas Public Library Cooperative card are eligible for limited privileges.

Fines

The SPC libraries assess fines when materials are overdue. The libraries do try to work with students to make sure fines are fair and can arrange for alternative payment options. Students who keep materials past the due date will eventually receive a bill, which includes notice of a hold on records. Being "On Hold" suspends further borrowing privileges and may cause difficulty in registration, obtaining transcripts, and graduation. Students are urged to seek help from the library staff if there is a problem with a hold. Usually a fair remedy can be worked out.
