Advanced Practice PICC Clinical / PICC Precepting
St. Petersburg College offers a PICC Precepting, which provides a unique opportunity for the advanced I.V. nurse to gain instructor supervised hands-on experience in the placement of PICC's.
The PICC Clinical (PICC Precepting) session will consist of observation, simulated skills and live hands-on PICC training in an acute care environment. Students will have the opportunity to perform one-on-one, instructor-supervised Ultrasound PICC placements utilizing the Modified Seldinger Technique (MST) approach.

Common PICC Certification Questions:
How do I become PICC certified?
First, please understand the term "PICC Certification" is misleading; as there is no current national certification program that exists for PICC insertion. When your employer (or potential employer) requires you to become "PICC Certified" they are in essence asking you to provide documentation that you have been properly trained to perform the PICC insertion procedure; which will have included classroom (didactic) and actual/live hands-on experience. Once you have completed PICC Education through Infusion Knowledge Inc., you would then register for one of our Advanced Practice PICC Clinicals; which will give you the necessary hands-on experience to become what is commonly referred to as "PICC Certified".
Where can I obtain the PICC training didactic?
Infusion Knowledge Inc. offers PICC Education classes, in the classroom, as well as in a self study format.
Where can I obtain my hands-on practice?
Once you obtain the PICC education didactic, then you will need to obtain actual hands-on experience. Many nurses who complete a PICC training (didactic) class are later precepted by a PICC qualified individual at their place of employment. If you do not have precepting opportunities available at your facility; St. Petersburg College does offer an Advanced Practice PICC Clinical that would give you the opportunity to perform actual/live one-on-one, instructor-supervised Ultrasound PICC placements utilizing the Modified Seldinger Technique (MST) approach.
Who may attend a PICC Clinical?
RN's and ARNP's are the only disciplines that are approved to register for a PICC Clinical through SPC. Though, there are other disciplines who are allowed to place PICC's based on their individual licensure scope of practice and institution policy and procedures; which include Physicians, Physician Assistants, Radiology Techs and Radiology Assistants.
Once I become PICC qualified where would I get a job?
The two main areas where PICC nurses work are on an I.V. Team within a hospital; or for an independent PICC line placement company. The laws/licensure/scope of practice of who may place PICC lines varies from state to state; as well as from institution to institution. We encourage you to check with your state board of nursing to find out if there are any restrictions related to the placement of PICC lines.
