MAT

MAT 0012L   PRE-ALGEBRA LAB

credits: 0

College Preparatory Credits (0000 designations) may not be used toward graduation credits. Corequisite: MAT 0018. This laboratory is to support MAT 0012, Pre-Algebra, and provide opportunities for applications of the basic skills and concepts of pre-algebra. 32 contact hours.

MAT 0018   DEVELOPMENTAL MATHEMATICS I

credits: 0

This course # was formerly MAT 0012. Prerequisite(s): Appropriate score on the SPC mathematics placement test. This is the first course in the college-preparatory two-course sequence (MAT 0018 and MAT 0028) designed to prepare students for college-level mathematics courses. This course is a study of the basic skills and concepts of pre-algebra from the point of view of the college student who needs an understanding of pre-algebra. Major topics include operations with integers, fractions, decimals, percents, geometric figures and their measures (including application problems), and other pre-algebra topics. A minimum course grade average of C (minimum 70% accuracy) is required for successful completion. This course does not apply toward mathematics requirements in general education or toward any associate degree. 47 - 62 contact hours.

MAT 0022   DEVELOPMENTAL MATHEMATICS

credits: 0

This is a developmental mathematics course which combines the two-course sequence MAT 0018 and MAT 0028, designed to prepare students for college-level mathematics courses. This course combines the study of the basic skills and concepts of pre-algebra with the basic skills and concepts of elementary algebra from the view of a college student who needs an understanding of both pre-algebra and elementary algebra. Major topics include operations with integers, fractions, decimals, percents, geometric figures and their measures (including application problems), and other pre-algebra topics, and operations with signed rational numbers, simple linear equations and inequalities in one variable, operations on polynomials (including beginning techniques of factoring), integer exponents, brief introduction to radicals, introduction to graphing, applications, and other elementary algebra topics. 77 contact hours.

MAT 0028   DEVELOPMENTAL MATHEMATICS II

credits: 0

This course # was formerly MAT 0024. Prerequisite(s): MAT 0018 or appropriate score on the SPC mathematics placement test. This is the second course in the college-preparatory two-course sequence (MAT 0018 and MAT 0028) designed to prepare students for college-level mathematics courses. This course is a study of the basic skills and concepts of basic algebra from the view of a college student who needs an understanding of basic algebra. Major topics include operations on signed rational numbers, simple linear equations and inequalities in one variable, operations on polynomials (including beginning techniques of factoring), integer exponents, brief introduction to radicals, introduction to graphing, applications, and other basic algebra topics. A minimum course grade average of C (minimum 70% accuracy) is required for successful completion. This course does not apply toward mathematics requirements in general education or toward any associate degree. 47 - 62 contact hours.

MAT 0055   Gateway to Intermediate Algebra

credits: 0

Prerequisite: Appropriate score on the SPC mathematics placement test or permission of a Mathematics Department program administrator. This flexible entry/exit college preparatory course is designed for college students who require only a limited amount of concept reinforcement to prepare them for Intermediate Algebra. Course strategies include one-on-one instruction, small group instruction, and computer instruction in a lab setting. A diagnostic assessment will determine placement into course modules as well as exit requirements. This course is intended to prepare students for successful entry into college-level course work.

MAT 0056   Elementary Algebra-My Bridge to Success

credits: 0

This course # was formerly MAT 0990. Prerequisite: Appropriate score on the SPC mathematics placement test or permission of a Mathematics Department program administrator. This flexible entry/exit college preparatory course is designed to improve the basic skills and concepts of elementary algebra from the view of a college student who needs an understanding of basic algebra. Course strategies will include one-on-one instruction, small group instruction, and computer instruction in a lab setting. A diagnostic assessment will determine placement into course modules as well as exit requirements. This course is intended to prepare students for successful entry into college-level course work. 17 contact hours minimum.

MAT 1033   INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA

credits: 3

Prerequisite: MAT 0028 or appropriate score on the mathematics placement test. Major topics include factoring, algebraic fractions, radicals and rational exponents, complex numbers, quadratic equations, rational equations, linear equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations and inequalities, introduction to functions and applications. 47 contact hours.

MAT 1100   Exploration of Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning

credits: 3.0

Prerequisite: MAT 0028 with a minimum grade of C or MAT 0055 with a minimum grade of C or MAT 0056 with a minimum grade of C or appropriate score on the mathematics placement test. This course builds the foundation for understanding selected concepts taken from topics which include algebra, set theory, logic, geometry, probability, and statistics. Critical thinking skills, problem solving strategies, communicating mathematically, and appropriate use of technology will be incorporated throughout the course via activities and projects. 47 contact hours.
