St Petersburg College once again presents a one-day workshop where you can experience exciting professional and personal training.  The 32 topics include delivery of services, staff development and a variety of hands-on computer sessions.  Paraprofessionals are essential to providing high-level library services! 1A: Readers' Advisory 101: Tips for Promoting Reading and Strengthening our Community
Get a jumpstart on Readers' Advisory tools and services in an interactive overview of best practices for readers' advisory interviews, book displays, and book discussions.  A handout with recommended books and websites will be provided.                                                           Presenter: Terri Romberger

1B: BAM! Kick up your Readers' Advisory Skills for Kids and Teens
Build confidence as you suggest enjoyable reads, selected just for fun.  Acquire return patrons amongst even the most reluctant readers. Model techniques for making connections in today’s world using “their” language and a myriad of available resources.                                       Presenter: Diane Cary and Susan Mutschler

1C: Book Repair and Preservation Needs
Discussions on book repair, techniques, supplies, and preservation needs. There will also be demonstrations of common repairs.

1D: Becoming a Library and Information Professional: All About Graduate School
This session will describe programs of graduate study at Florida State University and the University of South Florida, as well as updates on program requirements and new certificate programs.

1E: Communicating Across Generations
At home and at work, we interact daily with people from different generations who share different experiences and viewpoints. What defines a generation, and how are the generations delineated? Better yet, how do we successfully interact with all of them? Which communication style works best for each generation? This session focuses on these thought-provoking issues by helping participants identify effective strategies for improved communication across the generational divide.

1F: The Good Stuff: Reliable Medical Information on the Web                                                      There are tons of web pages offering medical information - not all of it reliable or authoritative. This session will give you good sites for answering the most common medical questions asked at the reference desk. Presenter: Karen Roth

1G: Virtual Hangouts
It used to be the ice cream shop, the park, or the local mall, but now teens hang out online. Come find out what's hot, what's not, and what's to come in the world of Web 2.0 at this hands-on workshop.

1H: Template Time Savers
Save time and increase your creativity with Word Templates.  This hands-on session will lead you through the creation of several templates. Learn how to customize Microsoft Word templates to make calendars, certificates, flyers, labels, newsletters and resumes for your library. Also learn how to turn one of your frequently-used documents into a time-saving template. Knowledge of Word is helpful.

2A: Storytelling for Beginners
Introduction to traditional oral storytelling.  Session will identify what storytelling is (and is not), provide tips on selecting, learning, practicing, and presenting stories to a live audience.

2B: Gaming & Teen Programming Ideas
Need teen programming ideas? Well, this is the right place. We've got ideas coming out of our ears! Pick up some tips on basic core teen programs, creative ideas for small and large crowds, and budget events for those feeling the pocketbook crunch.  We'll even throw in some arguments to justify teen programs for those with reluctant management. On top of all that, you will get a chance to experience first-hand one of the hottest trends in teen programming...video gaming. Challenge friends and complete strangers at the latest Wii, Playstation, and XBox titles.

2C: A Garden of Earthly Delights
Diversity-what we don't know can affect us. Who are REG and CLARA and why should they matter to us? We can tolerate diversity or we can celebrate it, but we can't escape it. Let's talk about how we can "grow" in our awareness and "cultivate" sensitivity.

Everyone can benefit with a few proven techniques that balance the body, mind, and spirit through breathing, easy stretching, and relaxing-in less than five minutes.

2F: Legal Resources on the Internet
Hands-on introduction to sources for finding state and federal cases, statutes, forms and other types of legal information, as well as law from other countries and legal self-help information.

This session will provide simple walk-thru for starting a MySpace, Facebook, or Ning page from scratch along with some tips for getting the most from the free promotional opportunities & incorporating Library 2.0 ideas.

3A: Survival Spanish for Library Staff
This workshop will provide library staff with basic skills for communicating with Spanish-speaking patrons. The focus will be on library terminology and phrases and conversational Spanish. This emphasis on basic vocabulary and short sentence structure will help you to improve your communication with the Spanish-speaking public, enabling you to better meet the community needs of this segment of library patrons. Workshop attendees will participate in discussions and through a series of role playing exercises will have the opportunity to apply vocabulary and phrases in day-to-day library scenarios. Workshop resources will include custom "quick guides" and "cheat sheets" that you can use immediately in your job.                      Presenter: Rosa Rodriguez

3B: The Sites of Web 2.0
It is amazing how many sites are coming online with Web 2.0.  This session will provide an overview on some of the cooler sites that are now using the newer technologies available on the Internet.        Presenter: Mark Opyd

3E: Personality Type in the Workplace
Come learn about the Enneagram personality type system and how you can use it to enhance your interpersonal skills and develop your untapped inner strengths.    In this workshop you'll learn to identify your basic personality type and it's common strengths and weaknesses, recognize behavior patterns in your coworkers and associates that will allow you to identify their personality type, and discover strategies that will help you resolve many of the misunderstandings that are the source of so many of the conflicts between the different personality types.                                                                                                       Presenter: Kevin Griffith

Need a quick fact?  How about the definition of a word or a currency exchange rate?  The Internet can be the most convenient and up-to-date ready reference resource, but where do you start? What sites are reliable and fast?  Come explore some of the great ready reference sources available online in this hands-on session.  Presenter: Jennifer Gregor

3G: Genealogy on the Internet
Genealogy is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the United States, and more and more family history is available online.  This session will provide a survey of some of these internet sites.  Included will be suggestions for research of your family history and perhaps finding that elusive ancestor.               Presenter: Susan Hickok

3H: From Tots to Tweens and Kids in Between
Websites and other tools that will spark your creativity and help you develop fun and educational activities for children from toddlers to tweens.

4A: Incorporating Sign Language into your library programs
Participants learn to incorporate sign language into their library programs in a fun and educational way through the use of songs, games, and stories, as well as a part of traditional instruction. Our program is designed for instruction of all children; hearing, hard of hearing, deaf, and disabled.                                   Presenter: Rosa Rodriguez

4C: Comics, Manga, & Anime
Want to learn about all those crazy cartoony things the teens are reading, watching, and talking about? Heck, even the little kids are into it all now.  From Spiderman to Hello Kitty, Sandman to Naruto, we'll discuss the history, popularity, and prevalence of graphic novels and their connected cartoons from America, Japan and more. Come, be clueless no more!

4D: Google - Tips and Tricks
Learn ways to more effectively use Google to help patrons find what they're looking for. This session covers things that you may not have time to figure out in the day-to-day use of Google.

4E: Handling Conflict at Work
This brief session will cover some strategies for dealing with conflict in the workplace. Specifically, conflicts with bosses and peers will be addressed: how to communicate up and across while maintaining good working relationships.

4F: E-Government Basics
As more government agencies make more information and forms available online, libraries are seeing more people come in wanting to access these resources.  Learn how to find and navigate these government resources.                                                                                                                              Presenter: Michelle Howard

4G: Everything is 2.0: Now What?
Although the Web/Library 2.0 buzz is noisy and sometimes deafening, it can be an exceptional tool to help librarians enhance traditional services. And with Web 3.0 on the horizon, it is the perfect time to ignore this buzz and actually do 2.0, let's follow a Web 2.0 principle and work together share our "real-life" experiences, and have fun along the way. This session will be a conversation, not a speaker speaking at you, so please bring your ideas and your willingness to share them with the group.

4H: Evaluating Internet Resources
This session will focus on how to quickly and efficiently evaluate internet resources. We will learn to spot clues which highlight relevance, authority, currency and accuracy of resources. This will be a fun session where we will examine and evaluate a number of interesting, yet entertaining resources. This will be very hands on session.
