Given her background, it’s not surprising that Jan’s specialty is helping eCampus students with their testing needs. Whether it’s taking the SPC placement test or arranging for off-site course exams, Jan can answer questions, help smooth the process, and make sure all requirements are met. Looking back at her elementary school teaching days, Jan says there isn’t a lot of difference in how she did her job then and how she does it now: "I just treat people with respect, whether they're big or small. Jay then returned to Illinois and went into business, but after a short time decided a career of helping people was what he really wanted. He enrolled in a master’s degree program in counseling at Assumption College in Massachusetts, during which time he worked with adolescents and adults diagnosed with learning disorders and mental illnesses. After completing his master's program, he became a counselor at Bradford College, also in Massachusetts. Jay moved to Florida in 1998 and joined the SPC family as a tutor on the Clearwater campus. He then moved to the Tarpon Springs campus, first as an academic advisor and then as a counselor. Jay says he likes the role of Cyber Advisor because it allows him to help students "navigate the often rocky waters of higher education and to achieve their goals at SPC and beyond." Welcita also has experience working directly with students. Before becoming a Cyber Advisor, she was a student services specialist in the Learning Commons at SPC’s Seminole Campus. "I’ve taken dozens of eCampus online classes, so I’m very familiar with online learning from the student’s perspective," she says. "With my education in technology and my experience working at SPC, I feel like I can really help students make progress toward their educational goals." A Pennsylvania native, Jan has been a eCampus Cyber Advisor since the fall of
2002-but she’s been part of the SPC family since 1989. After teaching elementary school for five
years, Jan joined then-SPJC’s Institutional Testing department. In 1998 she became an academic
advisor at the Seminole campus, and from there moved into her role as Cyber Advisor.
An Illinois native, Jay graduated from Illinois Valley Community College and
later joined the Army. While stationed in Germany, he completed his bachelor’s degree in English
at the University of Maryland’s European campus.
Originally from the Philippines, Welcita has been in the U.S. since 1993. She joined the SPC staff in 1999
as a student assistant, and has been expanding her education ever since. After completing her A.A. in 2005,
she completed her B.A.S. in Technology Management - completely online - in May 2006. She also has an A.S.
in Network Services Technology and several certificates in networking and other technical specialties.
