A welcome from the
president
As you know, St. Petersburg College works hard to
serve the needs of the people of Pinellas County.
Part of that mission involves working with various
constituencies – employers, professional groups
and governmental agencies, to name just a few – to
make sure SPC’s educational programs are effective
in meeting the professional and employment needs
of our area.
That’s where we need your help.
SPC maintains a series of advisory committees to
provide oversight and make sure our educational
programs remain on-point and effective. You and
the other people who serve on these committees
provide a critically important role in making sure
our programs meet the needs of students and
employers alike.
So, thank you for agreeing to serve your community
as a member of one of SPC’s advisory committees.
Please know that the time and energy you invest
in your committee work makes it possible for SPC
to develop and maintain programs that are the life
blood of Pinellas County’s economy.

Committee Meetings
Number/Length of Meetings
Advisory committees meet at least twice annually.
Additional meetings may be called as needed for
effective program coordination.
Meeting Minutes
A central file is maintained in the office of the
senior vice president of Academic and Student
Affairs. This file serves as a monitoring system for
the president to evaluate the effectiveness of the
program advisory committees.
Meeting Notices and Agendas
The chairman, in collaboration with the program
administrator, prepares notices of meetings and
agendas. The program administrator distributes
the meeting notice and agenda before the
meeting date.
Committe Leadership
The committee’s leadership is composed of a
chairman and the program’s administrator. These
individuals form a core team that leads the
committee in its activities.
Role of the chairman
The advisory committee membership elects a
chairman. This person serves for one year.
As the elected leader of the committee, the
chairman presides over the committee’s meetings
and is the committee’s spokesperson.
The chairman sets committee meeting dates and
agendas, coordinating with the program’s
administrator.
Role of the administrator
The program administrator acts as staff
administrator to the committee and the
program spokesperson.
Working with the chairman, the program
administrator provides information and advice
about college rules and procedures.
The program administrator is responsible for the
distribution of all copies of meeting notices,
agendas and minutes to all members, including
ex-officio members and site administrators. |

Responsibility
An advisory committee plays an important role in
maintaining and expanding the programs of the
college by performing five major functions:
- Assessing how the program meets the current occupational needs of employers.
- Reviewing and making recommendations on equipment and the program curriculum.
- Providing input to help prepare students for work in their chosen field.
- Providing input to help prepare students for
work in their chosen field.
- Assisting in recruiting, providing internships and
in placing qualified graduates in appropriate
jobs.
- Expanding and enhancing St. Petersburg College's reputation in the community by fostering positive community relationships.
Committee Structure
Each committee is comprised of five to 25 persons.
Ex-officio members of the committees include the
senior vice president of Academic and Student
Affairs or appointed representatives, plus program
faculty and staff.
Purpose
The function of an advisory committee is to make
recommendations to assist program personnel and
other administrators in developing and improving
program effectiveness. All recommendations
submitted by the committee will be considered.
A report from the college about the actions taken
and the reasons for those actions will be returned
to the advisory committee members.
Length of Service
Advisory committee members are appointed
to serve one-year terms beginning July 1 of the
current year and ending on June 30 of the following
year. To ensure continuity of the committee’s
activities, members may be reappointed to serve
additional terms.
