Subject Preparation for math, English, reading and writing

St. Petersburg College offers a variety of classes and resources to help you prepare to succeed in college classes. Once you are a student, we offer free tutoring and other resources.

If English is not your native language, your advisor can help you find the right courses:

Free, online, self-paced class

We've designed this FREE online class to help you practice and refine the reading skills you will need to be successful in college. You will need to understand how to read different textbooks for different courses, but no matter what the subject is, you will need to know how to understand main ideas and patterns of organization, and to identify purpose, tone and inferences.

  • The class is divided into six modules.
  • You will find a pre-assessment at the beginning of the course and in each of the first five modules.
  • Give the first pre-assessment a try. Then take the pre-assessment in each module to see where you stand. If you already have those skills mastered, feel free to move to the next module.
  • If your score shows that you need to hone your skills, work your way through the presentations and practice exercises. You also will find extra videos and slides if you want a little more help.
  • At the end of each module, take the post-assessment and see what you've learned.
  • You can return to the previous sections at any time and repeat them as often as you like.
  • In the sixth module, you will demonstrate your reading skills. Here is where you will read passages and answer questions about the passage.
  • After you've completed the modules, you will have a final assessment.
