Healthcare Informatics

Purpose: To prepare a workforce with the healthcare informatics skills needed by the healthcare community.
  • To increase the number of individuals with the healthcare informatics skills needed to fill healthcare job openings.
  • To increase the capacity of the College to prepare a workforce with the healthcare informatics skills needed by the healthcare industry.
Objectives: To implement the "Building the Healthcare Informatics Workforce Project" to increase the number of workers with the healthcare informatics skills required by the healthcare industry.
The capacity building strategies of this project will produce a new postsecondary healthcare informatics curriculum as well as curricular units for secondary students, a well-trained faculty equipped with the knowledge and skills required to teach the curriculum, and the marketing materials to recruit students to healthcare informatics careers. The new healthcare informatics program courses will be designed for online learning, but they will also be able to be delivered in a blended instructor-led format.
  • Increase new enrollments in healthcare informatics programs
  • Increase the number of completers or graduates from healthcare informatics programs
  • 85 percent of healthcare informatics certificate or degree program graduates obtain employment in a healthcare informatics related job or continue their education by Year 3
  • Increase healthcare program offerings by developing 6 healthcare informatics courses for incumbent training during Year 1
  • Increase the capacity of 15 College faculty to deliver state-of-the-art training for healthcare informatics
  • Increase the state-of-art technological resources available for training the healthcare informatics workforce by the end of Year 1 of the project
  • Increase the overall community awareness of healthcare informatics career and training opportunities
Grant Years Funded by the Department of Labor: January 1, 2007 - December 31, 2009

Target Student Population: 10th and 11th grade high school students, healthcare employees, incumbent workers, students in college preparatory classes, adult education students, vocational students, and community/faith-based youth groups.

Personnel: Project Director, Project Co-Director, Project Cordinator, Project Administrative Specialist, Informatics Faculty, Project Technologist

Classroom Location: 24/7 Online courses

College Services: All Participants have equal access to all college services including the library online and ANGEL environment.

Educational, Materials, Supplies, and Equipment: computers, printers, PDA's, and software for faculty to use in curriculum development and teaching in the healthcare informatics program. AHIMA virtual healthcare informatics laboratory database and Healthcare Informatics Online Self-Paced Tutorial.
