Jobs for Florida's Future Grant

Purpose: To expand the St. Petersburg College Associate Degree Nursing Program by 36 students to meet Registered Nurse (RN) workforce needs in Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Pasco Counties. This expansion addresses the current and continuing shortage of registered nurses as documented on local, state, and national levels.

Cooperating Agency: BayCare Health System,
a cooperative multi-hospital agency in the tri-county target area.
BayCare Health System

Grant year Funded by the Florida Department of Education: July 1, 2005 - May 30, 2006. BayCare Health Systems agreed to fund the second year, 2006 - 2007, of the two-year Associate Degree Nursing program enabling the selected target student population to complete the program of study.

Target Student Population: Lower-wage incumbent healthcare workers and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) at BayCare Health Systems' facilities in Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Pasco Counties. Successful completion of the Associate Degree Nursing program renders the graduate eligible to apply to take the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Upon obtaining a passing score, the graduate will be licensed as a registered nurse. This leads to increased wages for lower-wage healthcare workers.

Admissions: Twenty-four (24) lower-wage incumbent healthcare workers identified by and employees of BayCare Health Systems met requirements for admission to the two-year Associate Degree Nursing Program and commenced with initial nursing courses on Aug. 22, 2005. Twelve (12) additional prospective nursing students who met grant and nursing program admission criteria were recruited by BayCare Health Systems and admitted to the program in January 2006. Both groups of students are scheduled to graduate in May 2007. The students admitted in January will enroll in 2006 summer session nursing courses to be eligible for second year nursing courses in August 2006. Additionally, four (4) licensed practical nurses (LPNs) employed and recruited by BayCare Health Systems were admitted to the transitional LPN to Associate Degree Nursing Program in January 2006. These students will graduate in December 2006.

Personnel: Additional faculty members who meet SPC qualifications including a Master's Degree in Nursing were employed to meet grant program expansion requirements. One faculty member per a maximum of twelve (12) students is required for clinical practice per Florida Board of Nursing regulations.

BayCare Health System classroom

Classroom Location: Due to space limitations at St. Petersburg College, additional facilities were needed for program expansion. Classroom and simulated practice laboratory space are provided by BayCare Health Systems at Bay Vista, a BayCare educational services facility that is located mid-county in Pinellas County. Clinical experiences are being conducted in BayCare Health Systems Hospitals in Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties.

College Services: Students have equal access to all college services. Students can access the library online as well as on all campuses including the health care programs' specific library at the Health Education Center. Additionally, students have college e-mail available and can access the Nursing Program Commons on the SPC website.

Educational, Materials, Supplies and Equipment: Increased enrollment necessitated an increase in supplies and equipment to meet curriculum requirements so that students are prepared as safe practitioners in nursing with the requisite knowledge and skill for practice as well as for the licensing exam for registered nurses. An integral part of the grant was to provide funding for purchase of essential educational materials, supplies, and equipment.
