Veterinary technicians use their scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health, the relief of animal suffering, the conservation of livestock resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge. Upon graduation, students are awarded the Associate in Science Degree in Veterinary Technology. Students can then sit for the professional exams from the Florida Veterinary Medical Association or the
Florida Veterinary Technician Association.
SPCs Veterinary Technology Program and Distance Education Program are both accredited by the Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA) of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). There are currently more than 85 programs in the United States accredited by CVTEA.
SPC's Distance Education Program program recently won the Sloan Consortium’s Most Outstanding Online Teaching & Learning Program for 2007.
“This is a very prestigious award,” said Program Director Rich Flora. “It is usually won by the major universities.” He said the award is based on “courses, the design of the courses, what we teach and how it is provided to students and the learning outcomes.’’
St. Petersburg College also offers a four-year degree program in Veterinary Technology, designed to give students the knowledge and skills to become administrators and leaders in the veterinary technology field.
