Surgical Preparation
Preparing patients for surgery includes clipping hair and scrubbing the skin at the surgical site. These procedures should be performed outside of the surgical suite. Always clip hair in the direction of the hair growth and keep the clipper blade parallel to the skin. This will minimize the likelihood of irritation to the patient's skin (commonly referred to as 'clipper burn'). Once hair is removed, a small hand held vacuum can be utilized to remove the clipped hair from the area. |

Scrubbing the skin for surgery is a multi-step process. Once the hair is clipped, the patient's skin should be washed with mild soap and water to remove and gross dirt. A surgical scrub can then be performed. An appropriate antiseptic solution should be applied using sterile gauze. The scrub should begin at the intended incision and continue out in concentric circles to an area at least two inches larger than the expected size of the sterile field needed. The scrub should be completed three times and may incorporate a rinse with alcohol or sterile water between each scrub. The patient can be moved into the surgical suite by covering the scrubbed site with sterile gauze. |

Surgical personnel may include a circulating (non-sterile) assistant and a sterile assistant. The sterile surgical assistant must perform a complete surgical scrub of the hands and arms. The assistant must don a surgical cap and mask prior to performing the scrub. The scrub should proceed in a systematic fashion beginning at the fingers and ending above the elbow. Once the scrub is complete, keep hands above the level of the elbows and dry the hands and arms using a sterile towel. The drying procedure should also being at the fingertips and proceed to the elbows. |

The sterile surgical assistant must don a sterile gown and gloves prior to entering the surgical suite. Closed or open gloving can be used. Care must be taken to not contaminate the gown by brushing against tables or other individuals when entering the surgical suite. |
