Biography

I was raised in Daytona Beach and was graduated from Mainland High.I then attended Mercer University and received the A.B. degree.Following a brief hiatus as a folk musician, I attended Vanderbilt University where I completed my M.Div. and D.Min. degrees. After being ordained in the Christian Church(Disciples of Christ)I was in parish ministry with some experience in campus ministry. In 1992, I began my present employment with Lifepath Hospice as a chaplain and eventually as the Director of Spiritual Care.I have served on the faculty of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care and the National Hospice Organization.I have been an instructor with SPC since 1997.  Outside the classroom, my interests are travel, reading, salt water fishing, acoustic guitar, and Rock 'n Roll. I try to be accessible to my students as needed. Please do not hesitate to email me or call me at home if I can be of help in your educational endeavor!

Required Textbook: This class requires the purchase or lease of Ethics Applied Edition 6.0 or Ethics Applied Edition 6.5 (Goree, Keith. Manias, Nicholas & Till, Jane. Pearson Education).

You may use either edition - 6.0 (2009) or 6.5 (2011). [Previous editions cannot be used for this course.] This book is available in four formats. All four have the same content.

Credits: 3 Description: "G" Prerequisites: (ENC 0025 and REA 0017) or EAP 1695 or appropriate score on the SPC placement test. This course is a practical overview of key issues, questions and concepts in applied ethics. Special emphases are placed on the historical development of ethical thinking, a variety of ethical approaches and on multicultural aspects of ethics. Students will also examine a variety of personal, social, and professional ethical issues and problems and learn methods of resolving them through the use of critical thinking skills, sound ethical reasoning and legal and professional codes. Students are provided an active learning experience, increased student interaction and opportunities for independent research into ethical issues of personal interest. This course has a substantial writing requirement. This course partially satisfies the writing requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements . Credit is not given for both PHI 1600 and any of the following courses: PHI 1602H, PHI 1603, PHI 1631, PHI 2621, PHI 2622, PHI 2635 or PHI 2649. 47 contact hours.
