This is a course designed to survey American literature to 1865, with special emphasis on Romanticism and Realism as well as methods of library research, writing of the research paper and the paper of literary interpretation. Included are selected works of major writers such as Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, and Emily Dickinson.
