Biography
Hello,
I am the Seminole/ECampus
Associate Professor of Sociology
and Law, Dr. Lisa McDonnell.
I am also a co-cordinator for Women on the Way for Seminole Campus.
Education:
I earned my undergraduate degree in
Political Science and Law and Society with
minors in Criminal Justice and Professional
and Technical Writing from
New Mexico State University.
My Juris Doctor was earned at the
University of Oklahoma College of Law
where I was also a visiting law student at
Oxford University in England. I earned my
Masters in Sociology with an emphasis in
Criminology at New Mexico State University.
My PhD is from University of Arizona in
Teaching and Teacher Education
(Curriculum and Instruction) with
an emphasis in Mathematics Education
and Sociology of Education.
Teaching Philosophy:
My philosophy for on-line teaching includes emphasis on presentation, interaction and evaluation. The delivery of instruction for courses I teach include visual materials, lectures and supplemental outside sources/references. This variety is used to support different learning styles. Interaction between myself and the students’ include both asynchronous and some synchronous techniques to help build an on-line community. These include utilizing an announcement page, weekly discussion threads, e-mails and whiteboard for occasional chats. These combined techniques will help develop deep levels of interaction. Evaluation will include both formative and summative forms. Formative assessment will include feedback on assignments such as homework. Summative assessment will focus on the evaluation of papers and examinations.
When teaching on-line, students from every walk of life have an opportunity to learn and grow. As such, it is important to be flexible as not all people learn in the same manner nor do some require as much assistance as others. Through the years, I have moved to a more student centered approach where I am no longer the “sage on the stage”. I have grown to become more comfortable with my “guide on the side” role and have come to understand that I too learn from the students and that is an asset to my teaching. Education is a life long process and we all are continuing to learn, grow and ultimately discover our place within the world around us.
